Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Winter settled over New York with biting winds and heavy, gray snow clouds.

While 4th Street remained a peaceful sanctuary, the shadows in the underworld were shifting. The Nikolai family had suffered massive financial losses after being driven out of Brooklyn, and their patriarch—an old, ruthless tyrant named Victor Nikolai—was growing desperate.

Victor knew he couldn't beat Dante Corsetti in an open war. Dante controlled the unions, the docks, and the city’s political apparatus. But Victor was a serpent who understood that the strongest armor always had a single, unprotected seam.

In a dark, smoke-filled private club in Brighton Beach, Victor listened to a report from his intelligence chief.

"The girl," Victor rasped, his yellowed fingers tapping a crystal glass of vodka. "Corsetti visits her every Saturday at that rundown Italian joint."

"Yes, Boss," the lieutenant replied. "He goes alone. No bodyguards inside the building. Just two men in a sedan across the street."

Victor smiled—a horrific, yellowed grin. "Dante Corsetti, the great cold king of New York... undone by a waitress’s bastard child. How poetic."

"What are your orders, Boss?"

"We don't kill the child," Victor purred darkly. "Dead people leave no leverage. We take her. We bring her here. And when Dante comes to fetch her... we put a bullet in his head and take back Brooklyn."
