Chapter 9 - The Dawn on 4th Street

The sun rose over Brooklyn, painting the snow-covered streets in brilliant shades of pink and gold.

Outside Russo’s Kitchen, two ambulances and five black sedans sat parked with their engines idling. Medical staff were treating Connie’s minor cuts, while Mr. Vance directed a team of contractors who were already measuring the front entrance for new doors.

Inside, Amelia sat in the corner booth, wrapped in a thick blanket, her bloodied lip bandaged, her eyes hollow with agonized waiting.

The front door opened softly.

Dante walked inside carrying Sophie in his arms. The little girl was fast asleep, her small hands clutching the lapels of his wool coat, her breathing soft and steady.

Amelia gasped, dropping her blanket, and rushed across the floor. "Sophie! Oh God, Sophie!"

Dante carefully transferred the sleeping girl into Amelia’s arms. Amelia collapsed onto her knees, clutching her daughter to her chest, weeping tears of overwhelming, agonizing joy.

"She's unhurt, Amelia," Dante said softly, kneeling beside her on the floor. "She was very brave."

Amelia looked up at him through her tears.

Dante’s shirt was torn at the shoulder, covered in soot and ash, his knuckles bruised and bloody. But his eyes were clear, filled with a deep, silent relief that mirrored her own.

Without thinking, Amelia reached out and pulled Dante into the embrace, burying her face against his neck.

Dante froze for a fraction of a second—unaccustomed to touch, unaccustomed to warmth—before his heavy arms gently closed around both Amelia and Sophie, holding them close against his heart.

"Thank you," Amelia sobbed softly into his shoulder. "Thank you for bringing my world back."

"I promised you," Dante whispered, pressing a soft, reverent kiss into her hair. "I will always bring her back."
