Chapter 7 - The Broken Saturday

It was the first Saturday of December. A heavy snowstorm was blanketed across the city, dusting the burgundy awning of Russo’s Kitchen in pure white.

Inside, the restaurant was warm and quiet. Sophie sat at her usual table, wearing a bright red winter sweater, her colored pencils spread out before her.

"Mommy, is Uncle Dante coming?" Sophie asked, looking toward the window. "It's past three o'clock."

Amelia wiped down the espresso machine, glancing at the clock. "The weather is bad, sweetie. The roads are slippery. He might be a little late."

Suddenly, the front door was kicked open with shattering force.

Three men in white snow masks surged into the restaurant, heavy tactical shotguns raised.

"ON THE FLOOR! NOW!" one of them screamed, his voice muffled by the mask.

Connie let out a terrified shriek, dropping a stack of plates that shattered across the kitchen floor. Amelia lunged toward Sophie, but before she could reach her daughter, a second gunman grabbed Amelia by her hair, slamming her face against the counter.

"Mommy!" Sophie screamed in horror.

"Shut her up!" the lead gunman barked, grabbing Sophie by her red sweater and lifting her off her feet.

"No! Please! Take whatever you want!" Amelia sobbed frantically, struggling against the heavy grip pinning her to the floor. "Don't touch my baby! Please!"

"Shut up, bitch!" the thug holding her growled, striking her across the face with the butt of his pistol. Blood burst from Amelia’s lip, spilling onto her crisp white shirt.

The lead gunman stuffed a gag into Sophie’s mouth, wrapped a heavy blanket around her small frame, and pulled her toward the rear exit. "Tell Corsetti if he wants his little mascot back, he comes to the old iron foundry in Brighton Beach alone! He has two hours before we send her back in pieces!"

They vanished into the blinding snowstorm through the rear alley, the metal door slamming shut with a heavy, final thud.

Amelia lay on the cold floor, coughing blood, her tears burning against her bruised cheek. The silence that returned to the restaurant was suffocating, terrifying, and absolute.

Connie scrambled over, her hands shaking as she pulled Amelia up. "Amelia! Oh God, Amelia!"

Amelia didn't weep. She didn't panic. The terror in her heart suddenly turned into cold, blinding fire.

She reached for the counter phone, her fingers slick with her own blood, and dialed the emergency satellite number Mr. Vance had given her weeks ago.

The line rang once.

"Vance," a low, gravelly voice answered—not the attorney, but Dante himself.

"Dante..." Amelia sobbed, her voice breaking into a ragged gasp. "They... they took her. They took Sophie."

The line went dead silent.

Across the city, inside a high-rise office overlooking the frozen East River, Dante Corsetti froze. The glass of scotch in his hand shattered into dust as his grip closed around it with crushing force.

"Who?" Dante asked, his voice dropping into a register so dark it didn't sound human.

"Brighton Beach..." Amelia wept. "The iron foundry. They said... they said you have two hours."

"Amelia," Dante said, his tone turning instantly into solid ice. "Listen to me. Stay inside. My medics are on their way to you now."

"Bring my baby home, Dante!" she screamed into the phone. "Please! Bring her home!"

"I will bring her home," Dante swore softly. "And I will erase every man who laid a finger on her."
