Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Double Life

The emergency department at St. Jude’s moved with terrifying speed the moment I burst through the automatic sliding doors carrying my limp children.

"Pediatric triage! Immediate assistance!" a nurse yelled down the corridor.

Within seconds, a team of doctors and nurses surrounded us. Tommy was placed on a mobile gurney, an oxygen mask strapped over his tiny face, while another team took Lily into an adjoining examination room to start intravenous fluids.

I stood in the sterile hallway, my hands covered in cold sweat and dust from the ruined storage door, staring through the glass window as the medical staff worked frantically on my son.

"Mr. Miller?"

I turned around. Standing beside me was Dr. Marcus Vance, the chief pediatric specialist, alongside Officer James Carter from the city police department.

"How are they, Doctor?" I begged, my voice cracking. "Please tell me they're going to be okay."

"Your daughter is severely dehydrated and malnourished, but her vitals are stabilizing thanks to the IV fluids," Dr. Vance explained gently. "Your son, however, had suffered severe respiratory distress due to prolonged exposure to an unknown sedative."

My heart stopped. "Sedative?"

Officer Carter stepped forward, pulling out a small notebook. "Toxicology found trace amounts of a heavy liquid tranquilizer in Tommy’s system, Mr. Miller. It’s a drug commonly used to keep infants quiet for extended periods. We also found small bruises on Lily’s wrists consistent with soft restraints."

I felt nauseous. The world spun beneath my feet. I leaned against the hallway wall to keep from collapsing. Eleanor hadn't just neglected them; she had systematically drugged my infant son and tied up my five-year-old daughter to keep them quiet while she and Julian operated out of my home.

"Officer," I rasped, forcing myself to stand tall. "My wife... she isn't who she claims to be. She has a secret surveillance hub inside my house. She's working with a man named Julian Hayes."

Officer Carter’s eyes widened slightly. "Julian Hayes? The corporate fugitive wanted by the federal government for the Apex Financial fraud six years ago?"

"Yes," I confirmed, pulling the photos I had snapped on my phone inside the storage room. "He’s alive. He’s been living in my home while I was on business trips. They forged my financial signatures and prepared papers to declare me unfit so they could take my assets."

Officer Carter immediately grabbed his radio. "Dispatch, this is Unit 402. We have a Code 9 domestic felony in progress at 114 Maple Street. Suspects Eleanor Miller and Julian Hayes. Dispatch heavy units immediately."

Dr. Vance placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Mr. Miller, your children are safe here. Our pediatric ward is under strict security lockdown. No one enters without your permission."

I looked through the window at Lily, who was resting under a warm blanket with an IV tube taped to her arm. She caught my eye and offered a faint, tired smile.

I whispered to her through the glass: "I'm fighting for you, baby. I won't stop."
