Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

Flashbang grenades exploded across the warehouse floor with blinding white light and deafening booms.

Julian screamed, firing blindly toward the rafters as tactical SWAT officers rappelled down heavy ropes through the shattered roof.

"COVER!" I yelled, diving behind a stack of wooden shipping crates as bullets ricocheted off the concrete floor.

Eleanor shrieked, dropping the metal lockbox, which burst open, scattering stock certificates, passports, and legal papers across the wet floor. She tried to run toward the rear emergency exit, but two tactical officers breached the back doors, shield raised, cutting off her escape.

"GET ON THE GROUND! DO IT NOW!"

Julian swung his weapon toward an approaching officer, but a sniper round from the perimeter hit his right shoulder. He dropped the gun, howling in pain, as three officers tackled him to the concrete floor, pinning him under heavy tactical boots.

Eleanor was thrown against the brick wall, handcuffed forcefully behind her back. Her pristine trench coat was torn, covered in grease and rain, her hair matted against her pale face as she struggled frantically against the metal restraints.

"David! David, help me!" Eleanor screamed, her eyes wild with panic as she caught sight of me stepping out from behind the wooden crates. "Tell them it was Julian! He forced me to do it! He threatened me!"

I walked over to the scattered papers on the floor. I knelt down, picked up my mother’s original trust deeds, my stock certificates, and a worn blue folder labeled ORIGINAL HOSPITAL RECORDS - LILY.

I looked at Eleanor as the officers forced her to her knees.

"You blamed a dead man, Eleanor," I said softly, looking down at her with absolute disgust. "You drugged our baby son. You tied up our daughter. You stolen a child from a mother who loved her. You are going to spend the rest of your life in a federal prison cell, and you will never, ever see my children again."

"They're not your children!" Eleanor spat, her mask completely destroyed, revealing the ugly, psychotic reality underneath. "Lily isn't yours! You have no legal right to her! They will take her away from you!"

"I am her father," I said, holding the blue folder tightly against my chest. "And no one on this earth will ever take her from me."

Officer Carter stepped up beside me, placing a hand on my shoulder as federal agents dragged Eleanor and Julian toward the waiting armored vans outside.

"We have everything, David," Carter said softly. "The surveillance logs, the forged accounts, the toxicology reports, and Julian’s confession tapes from the house server. They're both going away for decades."

I looked down at the blue folder in my hands. The war with Eleanor was over. But the fight to protect Lily’s true origin was just beginning.
