Chapter 7 - Legal Warfare & Healing Grounds

Three weeks passed.
St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital had become our sanctuary. Under Dr. Vance’s expert care, Tommy’s lungs made a full recovery, his plump baby cheeks returning to a healthy pink glow. Lily’s dehydration was fully resolved, though the psychological scars required intensive, gentle therapy.
I moved us out of the Maple Street house immediately. I sold the property to a developer, refusing to ever step foot inside that hallway again. Instead, I rented a warm, sunlit three-bedroom cottage overlooking the rolling green hills of the suburban countryside, surrounded by tall oak trees and flower gardens.
Every morning, I made pancakes for Lily. Every afternoon, I rocked Tommy to sleep on the porch.
However, the legal storm was far from quiet.
In my new living room sat Evelyn Reed, Boston’s top family law litigator, whom I had hired to secure sole legal custody of both children and resolve the nightmare of Lily’s birth origin.
"David," Evelyn said, spreading court documents across the coffee table. "We have opened the sealed file from the blue folder. We tracked down the clinic in rural Pennsylvania where Lily was born five years ago."
My heart rate elevated. "Did you find her biological mother?"
Evelyn looked at me with deep sympathy. "Her name was Hannah Vance—no relation to Dr. Vance. She was nineteen when Lily was born, destitute, and battling a severe illness. The records show Eleanor manipulated Hannah into signing a third-party surrender agreement under false pretenses, claiming the baby was going to a wealthy, loving family through a certified state agency."
I rubbed my temples, feeling an overwhelming ache in my heart for that young, deceived girl. "Where is Hannah now?"
"Hannah passed away three years ago from her illness, David," Evelyn revealed softly. "She had no other family. Lily has no surviving biological relatives anywhere."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. Tears pricked my eyes. Lily was truly alone in the world—except for me and her little brother Tommy.
"What does this mean for my custody petition?" I asked, looking up at Evelyn.
"It means Eleanor’s legal team tried to argue that since neither you nor Eleanor are Lily’s biological parents, Lily should be placed into state foster care pending institutional review," Evelyn explained, her eyes flashing with legal fire. "But I filed a De Facto Parent Petition yesterday under state emergency statutes, citing your five years of continuous, loving parental care, your financial support, and the severe trauma Lily would suffer if removed from your custody."
Suddenly, the living room door opened. Lily stepped inside, holding a small wooden toy car I had bought her yesterday. She wore a bright yellow dress, her dark hair brushed neatly into pigtails.
She looked at Evelyn, then walked over to my chair, climbing into my lap and burying her small face against my neck.
"Dad?" Lily whispered softly.
"Yes, my sweet girl?" I asked, wrapping my arms securely around her, holding her close.
"Are we staying in this happy house forever?" she asked, her voice small and hopeful.
May you like
I kissed the top of her head, tears spilling freely down my face as I looked at Evelyn, who nodded encouragingly.
"Yes, Lily," I promised her, my voice strong and unwavering. "We are staying here forever. Nobody is ever going to hurt us again."
