Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in Glass and Steel

At 2:00 PM, the glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor of Apex Investments was bathed in bright afternoon sunlight.

Julian Sterling sat at the center of the mahogany conference table, fidgeting with his gold cufflinks. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes poorly concealed with lotion. Next to him sat Victoria, dressed in a garish emerald silk dress, her fingers tapping impatiently against her designer handbag.

They thought salvation was moments away. They believed that once the Apex deal was inked, the frozen fifty thousand dollars and my missing trust fund wouldn't matter anymore. They would be rich again.

The heavy glass door opened.

Julian leaped to his feet, a fake, charming smile plastered across his face. "Arthur! Good afternoon! We are so thrilled to finally cross the finish line on this historic—"

Julian froze. His words died in his throat.

Arthur Pendelton hadn't entered alone.

Walking right behind the veteran investor was Marcus Vance, two uniformed court officers, and me.

Victoria gasped, springing out of her chair as if she had been stung by a wasp. "You! What is she doing here?! Arthur, why is this psychotic girl in our closing meeting?!"

"Sit down, Victoria," Arthur said flatly, taking his seat at the head of the table. He didn't offer them a hand to shake. He didn't offer them water.

Julian’s eyes darted frantically between me and my uncle. "Elena... what is this? Is this some kind of sick game to get back at me because we had a disagreement yesterday morning?"

"A disagreement?" I echoed, stepping up to the opposite side of the table, resting my hands on the cool mahogany. "Julian, throwing a filthy rag into your wife's face and declaring her your servant isn't a disagreement. It’s an assertion of dominance by a desperate man who knew he was about to go to prison."

"Shut your mouth!" Victoria shrieked, pointing a polished nail at me. "Arthur, this girl is insane! She stole from our house! She abandoned her marital duties after less than a day! She is trying to sabotage my son's career out of pure malice!"

"Silence!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the boardroom, loud enough to rattle the glass windows.

Victoria flinched, her mouth snapping shut in shock.

Arthur slid the thick manila folder I had given him across the polished table, stopping it right in front of Julian.

"Julian," Arthur said coldly. "Explain to me why three million dollars of Sterling Corporation assets were transferred to a shell company in Panama called 'Vance Corporate Holdings' three weeks ago."

Julian’s face turned from pale to a ghastly, greenish ash. His hands began to visibly shake. "I... Arthur, that’s... that’s an internal restructuring account! It’s completely standard practice for offshore tax optimization—"

"It’s wire fraud," Marcus Vance interjected, stepping forward and placing a fresh legal document on top of the folder. "And name-dropping my law firm's name on a fraudulent shell account to frame my family if you were ever audited is a federal offense, Julian."

Julian looked at the document Marcus had laid down.

PETITION FOR ABSOLUTE DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE; DEMAND FOR EMERGENCY ASSET SEIZURE AND INJUNCTION.

"No..." Julian stammered, looking up at me with wide, terrified eyes. "Elena, please... you can't do this. We're married! We can fix this! Whatever I did... I was stressed! My mother was pushing me! I love you!"

"You love my trust fund, Julian," I said, my voice as unyielding as diamond. "You love the idea of having a meek little girl to scrub your floors while you burn through her family's money."

"Arthur, you can't listen to them!" Victoria tried again, her voice shrill with hysteria, grabbing Arthur’s arm. "This is a personal family dispute! The merger has nothing to do with this!"

Arthur pulled his arm away from her touch with absolute disgust. "The merger is dead, Victoria. In fact, as of ten minutes ago, my legal team filed a formal report with the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding Julian’s fraudulent books."

The room seemed to drop into an abyss of absolute, suffocating silence.

Victoria collapsed back into her chair, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Julian fell to his knees beside the conference table, looking up at me, tears of absolute panic welling in his eyes.

"Elena... please," Julian begged, reaching out to grasp the hem of my trousers. "Don't destroy me. I'll apologize! I'll publicly apologize on television! I'll clean the house myself! Just tell them to drop the SEC report! Please!"

I looked down at him. The man who had sneered at me fourteen hours after our wedding, standing over me with grease on his hands, expecting me to bow to his grand illusion of nobility.

I took a step back, pulling my hem out of his reach.

"You told me to earn my keep, Julian," I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear. "This is how I earn mine."

I turned on my heel and walked out of the boardroom, the rhythmic click of my heels echoing against the glass as the court officers stepped in to serve Julian with his official arrest warrant.
