Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The downfall of the Sterling empire wasn't a slow burn; it was a catastrophic demolition that played out across the front pages of every financial newspaper in the country.
Within forty-eight hours of our boardroom showdown at Apex Investments, federal agents raided the Sterling Corporation headquarters downtown. Boxes of hard drives, paper ledgers, and encrypted servers were hauled out in broad daylight, surrounded by a wall of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters.
Julian was released on a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bail—a fee Victoria had to secure by putting a second emergency mortgage on their beloved estate.
I watched the news coverage from the quiet sanctuary of my new apartment overlooking the river. Marcus sat across from me, sipping black coffee, scrolling through the latest court filings on his tablet.
"Julian’s defense attorney tried to request a meeting with us this morning," Marcus noted, not looking up from his screen. "They are offering a total waiver of any spousal support claims, immediate annulment approval, and a formal written apology if we agree not to testify in the SEC's criminal trial."
"Tell them no," I said smoothly, turning my coffee mug between my hands. "I want the trial to proceed. I want every single transaction laid bare in open court."
"I knew you'd say that," Marcus smiled. "By the way, your father called. He wanted me to tell you that the county clerk officially rejected the marriage license recording due to the fraud charges we attached to it. Legally speaking, Elena... you were never married to Julian Sterling. The union has been completely expunged from the state record."
A profound sense of relief settled deep into my chest. The stain of that fourteen-hour nightmare was officially washed clean.
"What about Victoria?" I asked. "How is she handling the estate mortgage?"
Marcus let out a grim chuckle. "That’s the best part. Because Julian used the estate as collateral for his Panama wire transfers, the bank initiated foreclosure proceedings yesterday. They have thirty days to clear out of the house."
Just then, my burner phone buzzed on the counter. It was a text message from an unknown number.
I picked it up and read the preview:
Elena, this is Victoria. I am begging you as a woman, as a mother. Meet me at the estate. Just five minutes. Please. I will give you whatever you want.
I stared at the screen for a long moment. A less experienced woman might have ignored it, dismissing it as a pathetic trap. But I knew Victoria. She was a rat backed into a corner, and a rat in a corner always tried one final, desperate bite.
"Uncle Marcus," I said, showing him the screen. "Victoria wants to meet at the estate."
Marcus frowned instantly. "Absolutely not. It’s too dangerous. Julian is desperate, and Victoria is unhinged."
"Which is precisely why I need to go," I replied, standing up. "She thinks she still has something to bargain with. I want to see the exact moment she realizes she has nothing left."

"I'm sending two private security guards with you," Marcus insisted firmly. "And you wear a wire."
"Deal," I smiled.
