Chapter 9 - The New Horizon

Six months after the grand opening of my firm, Vance Financial Security was featured on the cover of Crain's Chicago Business as the fastest-growing boutique forensic accounting firm in the region.

I sat in my corner office—the very same office on the fortieth floor that had once belonged to Arthur Pendelton, which my firm had subsequently leased—looking out over the city skyline.

A soft knock at my office door broke my concentration.

"Elena?" my senior associate, Sarah, stepped in. "Your four o'clock appointment is here. He says he doesn't have an appointment for divorce consulting—he’s here regarding a commercial investment partnership."

"Send him in," I said, sliding my glasses off and closing my ledger.

The man who walked through the door was around thirty-five, tall, with quiet, intelligent gray eyes, dressed in an understated, perfectly tailored dark suit. He carried himself with an effortless grace that lacked even a drop of Julian’s loud, insecure grandiosity.

"Miss Vance," he said, extending a hand. "My name is Gabriel Mercer. I'm the principal partner at Mercer Global Logistics."

I shook his hand, noting his firm, warm grip. "Mr. Mercer. What can Vance Financial do for you?"

Gabriel sat down, placing a neat, thin folder on my desk. "I read your recent paper on detecting offshore fraud in logistics networks. It was brilliant. My firm is currently expanding our North American operations, and I want Vance Financial to handle all our internal compliance audits."

I raised an eyebrow, amused by his directness. "You want to hire us to keep your own executives honest?"

"I want to hire you because you don't back down from a fight," Gabriel corrected smoothly, a subtle, warm smile playing at the corners of his lips. "I followed the Sterling case. Most people in your position would have taken a quiet cash settlement and hidden from the public eye. You took down a multi-million dollar corporate fraud ring in less than a month."

"I took down a family that thought women were property, Mr. Mercer," I said plainly.

"And that," Gabriel said softly, "is precisely why I trust you with my company's future."

We spent the next two hours going over his company's operational structure. For the first time in years, I found myself engaged in a conversation with a man who listened to every word I said, respected my intellect, and treated my expertise as absolute authority.

When the meeting concluded, Gabriel stood up and buttoned his jacket.

"Thank you for your time, Miss Vance," Gabriel said. He paused at the door, turning back to look at me with those quiet, intelligent eyes. "If I may... would you be open to continuing this conversation over dinner sometime? Strictly non-business, of course."

I looked at him—at the complete absence of arrogance, at the quiet respect shining in his gaze.

I didn't feel a surge of fear. I didn't feel the need to reach for my pepper spray or check my exit routes.

For the first time in a very long time, I felt completely, beautifully safe.

"I would like that, Gabriel," I smiled. "I would like that very much."
