Chapter 6 - The Public Relations Trap

At eleven-thirty that morning, I was sitting in the executive office of the St. Regis, finishing a nursing session with little Leo and Oliver. They were thriving, their tiny cheeks pink and healthy, completely unaware of the storm brewing outside.

Marcus walked into the room, holding a tablet displaying a live news feed.

"Evelyn," Marcus said calmly. "Graham and his mother have hired Victor Vance. They’ve gathered a crowd of news reporters on the steps of the County Family Courthouse. Vance is about to host a live press conference."

I handed the babies over to the head nurse, who placed them gently into their cribs. I walked over to the desk and pulled up the live stream.

On the screen, Graham was standing behind a pod of microphones, looking deliberately unkempt in a rumpled suit. Vivian stood next to him, wearing an old sweater and looking like a heartbroken, weeping grandmother.

"Thank you all for coming," Victor Vance’s loud voice boomed through the speakers. "We are standing here today to expose a terrible abuse of power. My client, Graham Harrington, is a devoted father and hard-working entrepreneur who was brutally cast aside by his wife, Evelyn Vale—the CEO of Vale International!"

The reporters leaned forward, cameras flashing rapidly.

"Ms. Vale used her vast fortune and corporate legal team to intimidate my client!" Vance declared passionately. "She threw him out, stripped him of his assets, and worst of all, she has kidnapped their ten-day-old newborn twin boys! She is keeping a loving father away from his sons purely out of spite and corporate greed!"

Graham stepped up to the microphone, squeezing out a couple of well-timed tears. "All I want is to see my sons!" he cried out dramatically. "Evelyn, if you’re watching this, please! Don't let your money make you heartless! Let me be a father to Leo and Oliver!"

I watched the screen with an impassive face. "He really thinks he can play the public relations game with me," I murmured softly.

"Should I have the media team issue a public denial?" Marcus asked. "We can issue a press release stating that he signed the divorce agreement voluntarily."

"No," I replied, a slow, icy smile touching my lips. "A press release is defensive. Never defend when you hold all the evidence. Marcus, call the chief of police and the district attorney. Tell them it’s time to release the security footage."

"The security footage from the Crestview mansion porch?" Marcus asked, his eyes gleaming with realization.

"Every single second of it," I said. "High-definition audio and video. Broadcast it directly to every news network currently airing that press conference."

On the steps of the courthouse, Graham was basking in the attention of the media. Reporters were shouting questions, expressing sympathy for his plight. Victor Vance was grinning, preparing to hand out copies of their emergency custody petition.

Suddenly, several reporters stopped looking at Graham and began checking their smartphones. Gasps echoed through the crowd.

"Wait!" a female journalist shouted, pushing her way to the front of the crowd. "Mr. Harrington! We just received a live video feed from the night of November 14th! Is this you?"

She held up her tablet, turning the screen toward the cameras.

The video was crystal clear. It showed the front porch of the Crestview mansion during the heavy snowstorm. The audio picked up every single word in perfect clarity.

“Get out and take your bastards with you!” Vivian’s voice shrieked clearly through the speakers, showing her spitting directly at my face.

The crowd watched in horror as the video showed Graham shoving a heavy suitcase into my post-partum torso, then violently shoving me and my ten-day-old babies out into the freezing night.

“Don’t make me laugh, Evelyn,” Graham’s recorded voice rang out on the courthouse steps for every camera to capture. “A cheap little designer like you trapping me with babies? You should be grateful I let you stay this long.”

The silence on the courthouse steps was instant and deafening.

Graham’s face went entirely ghost-white. Victor Vance’s mouth hung open in absolute shock. Vivian looked at the camera screens, her eyes wide with sheer horror as her own cruel words echoed back at her in high-definition audio.

"Mr. Harrington!" the female reporter yelled, her voice dripping with disgust. "Did you shove your wife and newborn infants into a snowstorm?!"

"Is it true you called your own children bastards?!" another journalist shouted.

"Did your mother spit on a woman holding ten-day-old twins?!"

"No... wait! That’s... that’s taken out of context!" Graham stammered, backing away from the microphones in total panic. "That video is altered! It’s fake!"

Before Graham could flee down the steps, three marked police cruisers pulled up to the curb with their lights flashing. Four uniformed police officers stepped out, marching straight up the courthouse steps toward Graham and Vivian.

"Graham Harrington and Vivian Harrington?" the lead officer asked coldly.

"Yes?" Graham whimpered, shrinking back.

"You are under arrest for felony child endangerment, domestic assault, and filing a false police report," the officer announced loudly, grabbing Graham’s wrist and snapping a pair of steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Another officer cuffed Vivian, who began screaming and flailing like a lunatic as the cameras captured every single second of their humiliating downfall.
