Chapter 7 - The Trial of Shadow and Steel

Two months later.

The city’s high court was packed to maximum capacity. The trial of Graham Harrington and Vivian Harrington had become the trial of the century. What was once seen as a routine high-society divorce had devolved into a massive criminal proceeding involving corporate corruption, grand larceny, and felony domestic abuse.

I sat at the prosecution table, wearing a crisp, ivory tailored suit. My hair was styled elegantly, and my demeanor was calm, dignified, and serene. Next to me sat Marcus and a team of the top criminal prosecutors in the state.

Across the courtroom sat Graham and Vivian, dressed in orange county jail jumpsuits. Their hands were cuffed to their waist chains. Without their expensive clothes, hair stylists, and designer accessories, they looked broken, aged, and hollow.

"All rise," the bailiff announced as Judge Helena Vance—no relation to Victor Vance—took her bench.

Judge Vance was a sharp, no-nonsense jurist known for her zero-tolerance policy toward domestic violence and financial corruption. She looked down at the defendants with an expression of profound sternness.

"We are here today for final sentencing and judgment in the matter of the State v. Graham Harrington and Vivian Harrington," Judge Vance declared. "The court has reviewed the overwhelming digital evidence, forensic audit reports, and witness testimonies."

Judge Vance turned her attention to Graham. "Mr. Harrington, you sat in this courtroom and tried to claim that your actions were the result of emotional distress. However, the video evidence clearly shows a calculated, malicious act of extreme cruelty toward a woman who had given birth just ten days prior, as well as toward two defenseless infants."

Graham kept his head down, tears dripping onto his jumpsuit. He didn't dare look up at me.

"Furthermore," Judge Vance continued, "the financial audit conducted by the state confirms that you systematically embezzled over four point two million dollars from Harrington Luxe, using corporate funds to finance a lavish lifestyle under false pretenses. You signed a legal surrender of all marital claims, which this court finds entirely valid and uncoerced."

Judge Vance turned to Vivian. "Mrs. Harrington, your behavior was equally abominable. Not only did you encourage domestic abuse, but you actively participated in the physical endangerment of newborn children, while living off funds stolen through corporate fraud."

Judge Vance picked up her gavel. "For the charges of felony child endangerment, domestic assault, grand larceny, and corporate fraud: Graham Harrington is hereby sentenced to sixteen years in state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first ten years."

Graham let out a choked sob, collapsing forward against the table.

"Vivian Harrington," Judge Vance continued, "for your active role in child endangerment, conspiracy to commit fraud, and perjury, you are sentenced to eight years in state prison."

Bang!

The sound of the gavel striking the wooden block echoed through the courtroom like a thunderclap, signaling the absolute and final end of the Harrington legacy.

As the officers stood up to haul the two crying defendants away toward the holding cells, Graham suddenly looked back over his shoulder. His red, swollen eyes met mine.

"Evelyn..." he whimpered, his voice barely audible over the murmurs of the courtroom crowd. "Please... forgive me..."

I didn't utter a word. I didn't glare at him with hatred, nor did I smile in victory. I simply looked at him with complete, absolute indifference—the ultimate realization that he no longer held any space in my life, my mind, or my heart.

I turned away as the heavy steel doors closed behind them.
