Chapter 10 - Eternal Light

Ten years after the night under the overpass.
The sun was setting over the vast, beautiful sanctuary of the Vance Foundation.
In a wooden pavilion overlooking the lake, a twenty-one-year-old Cora stood surrounded by young children from the sanctuary, teaching them how to play the acoustic guitar.
Across the lawn, twenty-one-year-old Nina, now a licensed pediatric nurse, was helping a little boy adjust his leg brace, both of them laughing happily in the evening light.
Leo sat on the porch of the main house in a comfortable rocking chair, watching his grown daughters with a heart full of gratitude. Beside his chair lay young Hero—a brindle mastiff puppy, the great-grandson of old Orso, who had passed away peacefully years before after a long, cherished life.
Cora handed her guitar to one of the children and walked over to the porch, sitting down on the wooden steps beside her father.
"What are you thinking about, Papa?" Cora asked gently, resting her head against his knee.
Leo reached down, gently stroking her dark hair, just as he had done on the night he found her in the snow.
"I was thinking about how small the world is," Leo murmured softly, looking out at the golden horizon where the sky met the lake. "And how a miracle can be waiting in the coldest place imaginable."
Cora smiled, pulling her mother’s silver swallow pendant from her collar and letting it catch the last golden rays of the setting sun.

"It wasn't a miracle, Papa," Cora whispered softly, looking over at her sister and the happy children playing on the lawn. "It was just love finding its way back home."
And as the stars began to twinkle in the clear night sky, illuminating the warm, bustling home below, the darkness of the past dissolved completely into an eternal, unbreakable light.
