Chapter 9 - The Song in the Sunlight
Two years passed in peace and prosperity.
The Corinna & Nina Foundation became one of the most successful youth rescue initiatives in the country, rescuing over two thousand children from unsafe living conditions and providing them with education, housing, and loving families.
Cora had developed a brilliant talent for music, attending the prestigious Juilliard School of Music's youth program in New York City.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, the family gathered at a small, beautiful chapel on a hill overlooking Lake Michigan.
Today was a solemn, beautiful occasion.
Leo, Cora, and Nina stood before a white marble monument surrounded by blooming white roses—the newly relocated resting place of their mother, Elena Vance.
Leo knelt down, placing a bouquet of fresh lavender on the marble base.
"We brought them home, Elena," Leo whispered, tears of joy streaming down his face. "They are safe. They are happy. And they are loved."
Cora stepped forward, holding her mother’s silver swallow pendant in her hand. She pulled out a small silver flute she had brought with her.
She lifted the instrument to her lips and began to play.
It was the same song she had sung to herself on that freezing night beneath the expressway overpass—the song she had carried through eight months of hunger, fear, and cold.
But it was no longer a song of grief or desperation.
