Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Door

The name Richard Vance felt like a drop of ice water in Eleanor’s blood.
In the high-stakes world of Manhattan finance, Vance was known as an unstoppable shark—a ruthless billionaire whose public image as a philanthropist was backed by an army of high-priced lawyers, private investigators, and political connections. Eleanor had sat across from him in glass boardrooms a dozen times over the past year. He was charming, immaculate, and possessed eyes as cold and empty as a winter sky.
She looked down at Maya, whose face was still resting against her chest. The little girl had bruises along her jawline that looked terrifyingly like the imprint of an adult hand.
Before Eleanor could process the horror of the note, the heavy glass doors of the emergency room swung open.
Two NYPD officers walked in, followed closely by a sharp-looking woman carrying a brown briefcase—a representative from Child Protective Services—and a tall man in a dark, expensive trench coat whose face Eleanor recognized immediately.
It was Harrison Brooks, the chief of private security for Vance Global Enterprises.
Eleanor felt Maya instantly stiffen in her sleep. The child awoke with a gasp, her eyes locking onto Brooks, and she scrambled behind Eleanor’s back, shivering violently and burying her face in Eleanor’s wet coat.
"Ms. Montgomery," Harrison Brooks said smoothly, stepping past the police officers with a practiced, professional nod. "What a surprise to find the CEO of Montgomery Tower in a municipal emergency room at three in the morning."
"Harrison," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into the icy, authoritative pitch that made executive committees cringe. She didn't stand up; she stayed seated, shielding Maya with her body. "What are you doing here?"
"We received a tip on our corporate security line regarding a missing person," Brooks replied smoothly, taking a pair of leather gloves from his pocket. "Mr. Vance's wife, Sarah, has been suffering from severe mental illness and postpartum psychosis. She abducted her two daughters from their estate in Connecticut yesterday evening."
The CPS worker, a exhausted-looking woman named Mrs. Gable, stepped forward. "Ms. Montgomery, if these are Mr. Vance’s legal children, we need to assess the situation. Mr. Vance has full legal custody according to court orders filed this morning."
"Court orders?" Eleanor challenged, her eyes narrowing as she locked glances with Brooks. "His wife left a handwritten note, Harrison. She was terrified for their lives."
Brooks offered a sad, sympathetic smile that made Eleanor’s skin crawl. "Sarah is extremely ill, Eleanor. She manufactures paranoid delusions. Mr. Vance is beside himself with grief and concern. He has a private medical team waiting at the helipad to take the children back to their home estate for specialized care."
From behind Eleanor, Maya whispered, her voice barely audible through her tears. "He hit Mommy... he pushed her down the cellar... don't let the scary man take us..."
Eleanor felt a white-hot wave of rage wash through her chest. She stood up slowly, stepping between Brooks and the child, her five-foot-eight frame suddenly towering over the space.
"These children are staying right here under medical observation," Eleanor said coldly.
"Ms. Montgomery, you have no legal standing here," the CPS worker warned gently. "If the father has legal custody—"
"—The father is under active federal investigation for domestic violence and child endangerment as of five minutes ago," Eleanor lied without missing a single beat.
Brooks’ smile flickered. "What are you talking about?"
"My legal counsel, corporate security, and the US Attorney’s office are currently reviewing a file found with these children," Eleanor said, staring straight into Brooks’ eyes with absolute, unyielding conviction. "If you take one step toward this child, Harrison, I will call a press conference on the steps of St. Jude's in twenty minutes. I will name Richard Vance, Vance Global Logistics, and every officer who facilitated this cover-up. Do you really want the Vance-Montgomery merger to collapse before the markets open at nine AM?"
The silence in the emergency room became deafening.
Brooks calculated the financial damage in his head within seconds. A scandal of this magnitude would wipe out billions in stock value before sunrise.

"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Eleanor," Brooks whispered, taking a slow step backward. "You don't know what you're sticking your nose into."
"I know exactly what I'm doing," Eleanor replied coldly. "Get out of my hospital."
