Chapter 7 - The Midnight Raid

By 11:00 PM that evening, the rain had returned to Connecticut, beating a frantic rhythm against the roof of a blacked-out surveillance van parked half a mile from the gates of Blackwood Cove.

Inside the van, Eleanor sat alongside James Calder and three elite operatives from a private tactical security firm she had hired through an off-shore retainer.

"He moved his legal team into court thirty minutes ago," Arthur reported over the encrypted comms link. "The judge signed the emergency pick-up order. State troopers will be at your Fifth Avenue penthouse in two hours to execute the warrant."

"They won't find the children there," Eleanor said calmly.

She had already transferred Maya, Lily, and Nurse Elena to a safe house in upstate New York owned by Sarah Lin—a location known to no one, not even Eleanor's own board of directors.

"Eleanor, if you go into Blackwood Cove without a legal warrant, you are committing federal trespassing, burglary, and kidnapping," Arthur pleaded. "If you get caught—"

"—If we don't find Sarah tonight, Richard will move her out of the country on his private jet tomorrow morning," Eleanor cut in. "And then she disappears forever."

She looked at James Calder. "Are the cameras down?"

James looked at his tablet. "Marcus just executed the thermal loop on their perimeter fence. We have a twelve-minute window before their secondary servers reboot."

"Then we go now," Eleanor said.

Wearing dark, water-resistant tactical clothing, Eleanor followed James and two operatives as they breached the side chain-link fence of the estate, sliding quietly into the dense, dark woods surrounding the Blackwood Cove warehouse.

The warehouse loomed like a black mountain against the stormy night sky. Steel doors, reinforced glass windows, and high-voltage security lights ringed the perimeter.

Using an electronic signal jammer, James breached the loading dock door. They slipped inside, their boots silent on the cold concrete floor.

The interior was massive, filled with rows of wooden shipping crates. But at the far end of the facility, behind a set of double-locked steel doors, a warm yellow light gleamed.

James drew his suppressed sidearm, moving ahead to clear the hallway. He struck the lock on the steel door with a heavy hydraulic breaching tool. The metal groaned and gave way with a loud CRACK.

Eleanor pushed past him, rushing into the room.

It wasn't an office or a storage room. It was a makeshift medical cell—sterile white walls, a single bed, monitoring equipment, and heavy iron restraints attached to the bedposts.

Lying on the bed, thin, pale, and bruised, her arms hooked up to an IV drip, was a young woman with dark, tangled hair.

"Sarah?" Eleanor whispered, rushing to the side of the bed.

The woman’s eyes fluttered open—hazy, drugged, and terrified. "Who... who are you?" she gasped, pulling away in fear.

"I'm Eleanor Montgomery," Eleanor said, gently taking the woman’s cold hand. "Maya sent me. I have Lily. They are safe, Sarah. They are safe."

Sarah’s pale face broke. A single, ragged sob escaped her lips as she clutched Eleanor’s hands with desperate strength. "My babies... my sweet babies..."

"We're getting you out of here right now," Eleanor said, pulling the IV line from Sarah's arm.

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered and died, plunging the room into pitch darkness, replaced a second later by blinding red emergency strobes.

A loud, mechanical metallic door slammed shut down the hallway, locking the exit.

Over the facility’s intercom speaker, Richard Vance’s voice echoed, cold, smooth, and utterly triumphant.

"Welcome to Blackwood Cove, Eleanor," Richard said. "I was hoping you'd be foolish enough to come yourself."
