Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Century

Two months later.
The snow fell softly over Foley Square, blanketing the granite steps of the New York State Supreme Court in pristine white. Hundreds of news cameras, reporters, and spectators lined the barricades outside, their breath freezing in the crisp morning air.
Inside courtroom 402, the air was warm and tense.
Richard Vance sat at the defense table, stripped of his tailored suits and gold watches, wearing an orange Department of Corrections jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his face hollow and drawn. Beside him sat his high-priced legal team, looking exhausted and defeated beneath the weight of hundreds of pages of unsealed federal indictments.
Standing at the prosecution table alongside the Assistant US Attorney was Sarah Miller.
She looked entirely transformed. Her hair was styled neatly, her skin healthy and glowing, wearing a simple navy blue dress. She held her head high, her eyes clear, steady, and filled with an unshakeable strength.
Eleanor sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing her signature charcoal Armani suit. On her lap sat seven-year-old Maya, dressed in a warm blue coat, holding a small plush bear. In a stroller beside them, three-month-old Lily slept peacefully under a hand-knitted pink blanket.
The judge slammed her gavel down, her voice echoing through the packed courtroom.
"In the matter of the State of New York versus Richard Vance," the judge declared, looking over her half-moon glasses at the defense table. "On the charges of federal wire fraud, human trafficking, unlawful imprisonment, and felony domestic assault... this court finds the evidence submitted by the prosecution to be absolute and unassailable."
Richard stared at the table, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists.
"Mr. Vance," the judge continued coldly. "You used your vast wealth and institutional power to torture your family, falsify medical records, and bribe public officials. You are hereby remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons without bail, pending formal sentencing."
The courtroom erupted into a chaotic storm of cheers, camera flashes, and gavel strikes.

As guards handcuffed Richard and led him away through the side door, he turned to cast one final, bitter look at Eleanor.
Eleanor didn't flinch. She met his gaze with cool, unwavering indifference, watching the man who had terrorized a mother and her children fade into the dark hallway of a federal prison forever.
