Chapter 4 - The Safehouse Siege

Silas burst through the double doors of the penthouse, Marco right behind him with his hand on his sidearm.

Clara was standing by the dining table. Maya was sitting nearby, looking confused and slightly frightened, her arms wrapped tightly around her chest. On the table lay the gray stuffed rabbit. Its back seam had been carefully unpicked with a razor blade.

"What is it?" Silas demanded, striding across the room.

Clara pointed with a pair of tweezers at a small object resting on a blue cloth. It was a rugged, waterproof micro-USB flash drive, painted bright metallic green, wrapped in a thin sheet of lead foil.

"It was sewn deep into the foam lining of the rabbit," Clara explained. "The lead foil was preventing the short-range scanners from reading it, but when I took the rabbit to stitch up a loose tear on the ear, I felt the hard plastic structure inside the stuffing. This is what Elena hid."

Silas picked up the tiny green drive. "The green book."

"Daddy, is Mom’s toy broken?" Maya asked, her voice trembling slightly. "She told me never to open Barnaby. She said Barnaby was keeping the secret safe."

Silas walked over to Maya, dropping to his knee and gently taking her hands. "Barnaby is fine, sweetheart. Clara was just helping us find what your mom wanted me to have. You did a great job keeping it safe. Your mom would be so proud of you."

Maya’s eyes glistened with tears, but she nodded, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "Is it time to run again?"

"No," Silas said firmly. "It's time to move to a place where we can finish this."

He turned to Marco. "Prepare the convoy. We’re moving her to the estate in Geneva Lake. The Raven Room is too public. If Cordero knows she’s in the city, he’ll throw everything he has at this building."

"Geneva Lake is fortified, but the drive takes an hour through open highways," Marco warned. "If they have eyes on us, we’ll be vulnerable on the road."

"We take three decoy SUVs," Silas ordered sharply. "Decoy routes through the west side. We put Maya in the armored Suburban with me, Clara, and four tactical operators. Marco, you lead the rear guard. If anyone steps onto the highway, cut them down."

Twenty minutes later, the convoy rolled out of the Raven Room’s subterranean parking garage into the crisp afternoon light. Three identical black Suburbans merged into traffic, moving swiftly toward the I-90 expressway heading northwest toward Wisconsin.

Inside the middle Suburban, Maya was strapped into a custom child seat in the captain's chair, flanked by Silas and Clara. Two heavily armed guards sat in the front seat, their eyes scanning the surrounding traffic through heavy tinted glass.

Maya stared out the window at the passing city buildings. "Where are we going?"

"To a house in the woods near a lake," Silas said, reaching across to hold her small hand. "It has big trees, a fireplace, and a giant dog named Buster."

Maya’s eyes lit up slightly. "A dog?"

"A big retriever," Silas smiled softly. "He’s terrible at guarding, but he loves pancakes."

For a brief moment, a small, genuine smile touched Maya’s lips. It was the first real smile Silas had seen on her face, and it sent a wave of profound warmth through his chest. He realized then that he would destroy every empire on earth just to keep that smile alive.

Suddenly, a loud CRACK shattered the air.

The driver’s side mirror erupted into a cloud of plastic and glass fragments. The massive Suburban lurched violently as the driver slammed on the brakes, tires screeching against the asphalt.

"SNIPER!" the front passenger yelled, drawing his sidearm. "Overpass at mile 14!"

Before Silas could react, a heavy construction vehicle—a dump truck—rammed through the concrete highway divider from the oncoming lanes, smashing directly into the lead decoy SUV in front of them. The collision was deafening, a brutal metal-on-metal crunch that flipped the lead vehicle onto its roof.

"Get us off the road! NOW!" Silas shouted, throwing his body across Maya to cover her completely with his broad frame.

"I can't go forward, Boss! It's blocked!" the driver screamed as heavy automatic gunfire began peppering the reinforced armored glass of the Suburban. The bulletproof glass held, but white starburst fractures began spreading across the windshield.

Behind them, two black pickup trucks swerved around traffic, cutting off the rear guard SUV. Men in tactical gear jumped out of the beds of the trucks, carrying suppressed rifles, advancing systematically on Silas’s vehicle.

"Marco!" Silas barked into his radio. "We’re boxed in at mile 14!"

"We're hit behind you, Silas!" Marco’s voice cracked over the static-filled radio, punctuated by the heavy chug of gunfire. "They laid an ambush! We're pinned down!"

"Clara, take Maya!" Silas commanded, unholstering his heavy custom SIG Sauer from beneath his sweater.

"Daddy!" Maya screamed, her small arms reaching out for him as Clara unbuckled her and pulled her down into the footwell beneath the rear seats, covering her body completely with a Kevlar blanket.

"Stay down, Maya!" Silas yelled over the deafening thump of bullets hammering the armored doors. "Don't move!"

Silas kicked open the rear door on the protected side of the vehicle, using the heavy steel door as a shield. The air was full of the metallic tang of gunpowder and burning rubber. Four attackers were advancing from the right shoulder, moving in precise military formation.

Silas didn't hesitate. He leaned around the door frame and fired three rapid shots. The lead hitman dropped instantly, caught in the throat and chest. The second attacker ducked behind a sedan, returning fire that chipped concrete near Silas’s boots.

"They're trying to take the car intact!" the guard beside Silas yelled, firing a volley through the broken side window. "They want the kid!"

"They won't take a damned thing," Silas roared.

He reached into his tactical vest, pulled a flashbang grenade, pulled the pin with his teeth, and tossed it over the roof of the Suburban.

A blinding white light and a ear-splitting BANG detonated over the attackers. Taking advantage of the shock, Silas stepped out from behind the door, his eyes cold and lethal, and systematically put down the remaining three attackers with precise, ruthless shots.

Behind them, the roar of a heavy diesel engine shook the pavement. Marco had driven his damaged SUV straight through one of the pickup trucks, clearing a path through the blockade. The rear Suburban pulled up alongside Silas, its driver’s door torn open, Marco standing on the running board with an automatic shotgun in hand.

"CLEAR!" Marco yelled, blasting two more attackers who were trying to advance from the overpass embankment. "GET HER IN MY CAR! GO!"

Silas reached into the footwell, scooping Maya up in his arms. She was sobbing, her hands clamped tightly over her ears, her face pale with terror. Silas pulled her close against his chest, shielding her eyes from the bloody scene on the highway, and sprinted across the asphalt into Marco’s waiting vehicle.

Clara scrambled in right behind them. The rear Suburban slammed its doors, swerved around the burning wreckage, and tore down the highway embankment onto the service road, vanishing into the treeline before secondary reinforcements could arrive.

Silas held Maya tightly in his lap, feeling her small body trembling violently against his chest.

"It's over, Maya," Silas whispered into her hair, his breathing heavy, his heart pounding with a murderous rage he had never felt in his life. "It's over. I've got you."

Maya pulled back slightly, her gray eyes swimming with tears, looking at the fresh blood splattered across Silas’s sleeve.

"You promised," she sobbed softly. "You promised the loud men wouldn't come."

May you like

Silas closed his eyes, accepting the sharp pain of her words. He wiped the tears from her cheek with his thumb, his voice dead quiet.

"I promised they wouldn't hurt you, Maya," Silas said. "And they didn't. But now... I'm going to make sure they never speak again."
