Chapter 6 - Blood and Business

Over the next seventy-two hours, the Midwest underworld experienced a silent, terrifying earthquake.

Silas did not fire a single bullet in Chicago. Instead, he worked from the high-tech command center in the basement of the Geneva Lake estate, deploying Elena’s data like a precision surgeon operating with a scalpel.

On Tuesday morning, a secure file containing evidence of stolen cartel shipments was delivered to the Sinaloa cartel’s regional representatives in Detroit. By Tuesday afternoon, three of Cordero’s primary supply warehouses in Indiana were raided and burned to the ground by his own former allies.

On Wednesday night, financial records revealing that Cordero had embezzled fifty million dollars from his captains' pension accounts were anonymously distributed to his top five lieutenants. By Thursday morning, two of those lieutenants had openly defected, taking forty percent of Cordero’s foot soldiers with them and turning the streets of Cincinnati into an absolute warzone.

Julian Cordero’s empire, built over thirty years of terror and extortion, was collapsing like a house of cards under the weight of its own greed and betrayal.

Meanwhile, at the lake house, a completely different transformation was taking place.

For the first time in her life, Maya was experiencing what it meant to be a normal child. Under Clara’s watchful eye, she spent her mornings doing school lessons at the kitchen table. In the afternoons, she ran around the wide, fenced lawn with Buster, her laughter ringing out across the quiet waters of the lake.

Silas watched her from the wrap-around porch, a mug of black coffee in his hand.

"She’s gaining weight," Clara said, stepping up beside him on the porch. "Her cheeks have color again. She slept through the entire night last night without waking up once."

"She asked me this morning if we could get a tire swing for the oak tree near the dock," Silas said, a small, genuine warmth in his eyes. "I didn't even know how to build a tire swing."

"Marco built one in ten minutes," Clara laughed softly. "He spent two hours showing her how to swing higher. I’ve never seen a giant lieutenant look so terrified of letting a seven-year-old fall."

"Marco has a good heart," Silas said. "He just hides it under two hundred and fifty pounds of muscle."

He looked back at the lake, where Maya was swinging on the tire, her dark hair flying in the breeze, Buster barking excitedly below her. The sight filled Silas with a deep, profound peace—a peace he had never known existed in his violent, chaotic life.

"You're going to have to leave soon, aren't you?" Clara asked quietly.

Silas’s expression hardened, the warmth in his eyes replaced by cold resolve. "Cordero is trapped in his compound in Cincinnati. He’s lost eighty percent of his men. His allies have abandoned him. He’s desperate, Clara. And a desperate rat is the most dangerous kind."

"He knows he’s losing," Clara said. "He knows it’s you."

"He knows," Silas agreed. "He sent a message through an intermediary two hours ago. He wants a meeting. Neutral ground on the border of Indiana."

"It's a trap," Clara warned instantly.

"Of course it's a trap," Silas said smoothly. "Which is why I’m not going to the meeting."

He turned to look at Clara. "I'm going straight to his estate while he’s waiting for me at the border. I'm going to end this where it started."

Before Clara could reply, Marco stepped onto the porch, his face pale, holding a satellite phone.

"Silas," Marco said, his voice unusually tight. "We have a situation at the gate."

Silas set his coffee mug down, his body instantly going on high alert. "What happened?"

"A vehicle just drove through the front perimeter gate," Marco reported grimly. "It wasn't an attack. It was a single driver. He crashed into the security post."

"Who is it?" Silas asked, his hand dropping to his sidearm.

"It's Dominic Rossi," Marco revealed. "The Chicago boss who argued with you at the council. He’s covered in blood, Silas. He says Cordero sold out the Chicago bosses to federal agents three hours ago, and he has a message from Cordero personally."

Silas walked rapidly off the porch, heading toward the main gate, his jaw clenched tight. "What message?"

May you like

Marco swallowed hard, looking back toward the lake where Maya was laughing on the tire swing.

"Rossi says... Cordero knows about the lake house."
