Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

While the public battle raged across the airwaves, Victor met with Ryan in a secure room at the Romano Global Annex. On the wall was a white board covered in diagrams connecting Vance Logistics, Apex Recovery, and several corrupt law enforcement figures.

"We cracked David Hayes' encrypted files," Ryan announced, clicking a remote to bring up financial ledgers on a display screen. "David was brilliant, Victor. He realized that Vance Logistics wasn't just laundering money; they were running an illegal organ and human trafficking smuggling ring disguised as container shipping through Port Meridian."

Victor’s face hardened. "Human trafficking?"

"Yes," Ryan said grimly. "They used Apex Recovery Solutions to identify families deep in debt, stripped them of their assets, and then pressured them into working off 'debts' in unregistered commercial facilities. When David found out, he copied the manifest numbers, ship registry codes, and offshore bank accounts."

"And when Vance found out David had the evidence, he arranged the warehouse accident," Victor inferred.

"Precisely. David knew he was in danger. He hid the physical flash drive containing the master cryptographic keys inside something Vance's men would never suspect."

Victor looked up sharply. "Inside what?"

"A small metal capsule concealed inside the hollow frame of Emily's pink bicycle," Ryan revealed. "David welded it shut himself before he died. That’s why Emily was so attached to that bike—her father gave it to her right before he died, telling her never to let anyone take it."

Victor stood frozen as the full weight of the truth washed over him.

The little girl hadn't just been trying to sell her bicycle to buy bread—she had been carrying the very weapon that could bring down an empire, totally unaware of the power hidden beneath its rusted paint.

"Where is the bicycle right now?" Victor demanded urgently.

"It’s in the trunk of your SUV in the hotel underground garage," Ryan answered.

At that exact moment, Victor's cell phone buzzed. It was Marcus.

"Boss, we have a breach at the Grand Regency garage," Marcus's voice crackled over the line, accompanied by the sound of screeching tires and muffled gunshots. "Vance's men just hit the vehicle bay! They're after the car!"

"Get Sarah and the children to the panic suite immediately!" Victor roared, sprinting toward the exit. "I'm on my way!"
