Chapter 6 - Desperate Measures

At 10:00 PM, a storm raged over the coastal estate of Marcus Vance. High on a cliff overlooking the churning Atlantic ocean, the Vance Manor was fortified like a fortress. Private armed guards patrolled the iron gates and sprawling manicured lawns.

Inside his opulent library, Marcus Vance poured himself a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. On the Persian rug before him lay the battered, rusty pink bicycle, its frame cracked open where his men had used an angle grinder to cut into the steel.

Beside the bike sat the small metal capsule.

"We got it, boss," Drake said, leaning heavily on a cane. "The drive was inside, just like the informant said. Romano’s legal team called ten minutes ago—they’re offering to drop all lawsuits if you trade the drive for a full release of liability."

Vance laughed hysterically, throwing his head back. "Romano thought he could destroy me! He thought a few corporate moves could stop Marcus Vance! Tell Romano I’ll meet him. Tell him to come alone to my estate. When he gets here, I'll destroy the drive in front of his eyes, and then... well, accidents happen on slippery cliffside roads."

"Are you sure about inviting Romano here, sir?" Drake asked nervously. "He isn't a normal businessman. He has deep military connections."

"He's a soft-hearted old fool who got emotional over a street brat!" Vance sneered. "He brought a knife to a gunfight. Make the call!"

Twenty minutes later, a single dark sedan pulled through the iron gates of the Vance estate, stopping in the circular driveway.

The door opened, and Victor Romano stepped out alone into the roaring wind and rain. He wore his black wool coat, walking with calm, unhurried steps up the stone staircase toward the massive double doors of the manor.

Inside the grand parlor, Vance waited, flanked by six heavily armed security personnel. The rusty bicycle lay between them like a trophy of war.

"Welcome to my home, Mr. Romano," Vance said, holding up the metal capsule. "I believe you came to buy back your little protégé's toy?"

Victor stopped ten feet away, calmly taking off his leather gloves.

"You took a child's bicycle, Marcus," Victor said softly. "You murdered her father, stripped her home, left her mother to starve, and built an empire on the blood of helpless families. Did you truly believe there would be no reckoning?"

"Reckoning?" Vance cackled. "In this world, power makes the rules! I own the police, I own the judges, and now, I own the evidence! Once I burn this drive, you have nothing!"

Vance pulled a small blowtorch from his desk, ignition clicking as a blue flame erupted. He held the metal capsule over the flame.

Victor didn't move an inch. He simply looked at his luxury wristwatch.

"Ten seconds," Victor said quietly.

"Ten seconds until what?" Vance mocked. "Until you beg for mercy?"

May you like

"Five seconds," Victor continued.

Suddenly, the glass dome ceiling of the parlor shattered into a million sparkling shards as flash-bang grenades descended from above!
