Chapter 10 - The Garden of Beginning

As the afternoon sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Chicago sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and soft violet, the crowd slowly dispersed.

The courtyard grew quiet.

Nathan and Clara walked slowly along the stone pathway of the school garden, their fingers naturally entwined, their shoulders touching softly in the cool evening breeze.

They reached a quiet stone bench beneath a large, golden-leaved maple tree—the exact spot where, twenty years ago, they had sat sharing a single sandwich on a cold autumn afternoon.

Clara stopped, looking up at the high glass windows of the library reflecting the sunset.

"It's hard to believe this is the same place," Clara whispered softly, leaning her head gently against Nathan’s shoulder.

"It isn't the same place," Nathan said, turning to look down at her face, his dark hazel eyes filled with a deep, infinite tenderness. "And we aren't the same people."

Clara smiled, reaching up to touch the faint dimple on his cheek. "You kept your promise, Nathan. You changed the world for her. For all of them."

"I didn't change it alone, Clara," Nathan said gently, taking both of her hands into his broad, warm palms. "I spent twenty years building an empire because I thought money was the only thing that could keep me safe from the cold. But I was still frozen inside until I found you again."

Nathan reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart began to beat with a sweet, frantic rhythm as she looked from the box up into Nathan’s eyes.

Nathan dropped to one knee on the quiet stone path, holding the open box up toward her. Inside rested a flawless, brilliant-cut diamond ring set in platinum, surrounded by two tiny, radiant blue sapphires—the exact color of the library tiles where they had first met as children.

"Clara Vance," Nathan said, his voice trembling with raw, unadulterated emotion. "Nineteen years ago, you gave me your kindness when I had nothing. Today, I give you my heart, my life, and my family. Will you marry me?"

Clara dropped to her knees beside him on the stone path, throwing her arms around his neck, holding him tight as tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down her cheeks.

"Yes," Clara sobbed happily into his neck. "Yes, Nathan! A thousand times yes!"

Nathan pulled her close, pressing his lips against hers in a long, deep, life-changing kiss that erased every shadow of their past, sealing a promise that no darkness in this world could ever break again.

From the high glass doors of the library, seven-year-old Lily ran out onto the courtyard lawn, holding a brand-new storybook in her hands, her bright laughter ringing clearly across the autumn air.

"Mommy! Nathan!" Lily shouted, running toward them with her arms open wide. "Look what I found!"

Nathan stood up, scooping Lily into his right arm and pulling Clara close against his left side, holding his entire world securely against his chest.

The smell of bleach and the memory of tears were gone forever—replaced by the warm, eternal light of a home where no child would ever have to scrub the floor to be loved.
