Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit

At 1:00 AM, while the city of Chicago slept under a blanket of heavy fog, a convoy of four dark SUVs pulled up to the curb outside the administrative headquarters of the Chicago Public School District.

Nathan Reed stepped out of the lead vehicle, flanked by Arthur Vance—a formidable, seventy-year-old man with silver hair and razor-sharp blue eyes—and six forensic accountants carrying high-speed encrypted data servers.

The security guard at the front desk jumped out of his chair as the heavy glass doors opened.

"Sir! The building is closed!" the guard shouted. "You can't be in here!"

Arthur Vance stepped forward, sliding a thick leather folder across the marble desk.

"I am Arthur Vance, Special Legal Counsel representing the Federal Treasury Inspector General," Arthur said, his voice echoing like thunder in the empty marble foyer. "This is an emergency court order authorizing an immediate forensic audit of all sanitation, maintenance, and facility management contracts issued by this district over the last thirty-six months."

The guard stared at the federal judge’s signature at the bottom of the document, his jaw dropping. "I... I have to call Superintendent Mercer!"

"Call him," Nathan said coldly, stepping past the desk toward the elevators. "Tell him he has two hours to get down here before we start breaking down the doors to his private file room."

Twenty minutes later, the fourth floor of the administrative building was a hive of intense, high-stakes financial warfare.

Nathan’s forensic team had overridden the server locks on the district’s central database, pulling up thousands of invoices, bank transfers, and digital receipts associated with Apex Facility Solutions.

Nathan stood behind his chief auditor, staring at a massive monitor displaying a maze of complex shell companies flowing from Delaware through Panama to the Cayman Islands.

"Here it is, Mr. Reed," the chief auditor declared, pointing a pen at a row of red ledger entries. "Apex Facility Solutions has been billing the district four hundred thousand dollars a month for 'specialized biohazard sanitation services' across thirty public schools."

"And how much of that money actually went to cleaning supplies and staff?" Nathan asked.

"Less than twelve percent," the auditor revealed, zooming in on the sub-ledgers. "The rest was funneled into three private holding accounts. One belongs to Arthur Caldwell. The other two belong to a corporation registered under the name Mercer Holdings LLC."

Arthur Vance leaned over the chair, his brow furrowing as he scanned the dates of the transactions.

"Nathan," Arthur said quietly, pointing to an entry from three years prior. "Look at this line item."

Nathan leaned in.

The entry was dated October 14th, three years ago. It was a wire transfer of two hundred thousand dollars from Apex Facility Solutions to a private offshore account, labeled: Settlement Fee - Mark Vance Audit.

Nathan’s eyes narrowed. "Mark Vance? Clara’s late husband?"

"Mark Vance was an accountant for Apex three years ago," Arthur Vance said, his voice grim. "He must have discovered this exact fraud pattern. Two days after this wire transfer was made, Mark Vance died when a steel girder fell on his car at an Apex construction site."

Nathan stood up slowly, the blood draining from his face as the terrifying truth fully illuminated the dark corners of the conspiracy.

"It wasn't an accident," Nathan whispered. "Mercer didn't just exploit Clara and Lily out of greed. He kept Clara impoverished and trapped in that cafeteria job to make sure she never had the financial resources or legal power to hire an investigator to look into her husband's death!"

Before Nathan could speak another word, the heavy glass doors of the server room slammed open.

Superintendent Julian Mercer stood in the doorway, flanked by three uniformed police officers.

"Nathan Reed!" Mercer shouted, his face red with rage. "You are trespassing on municipal property! Officers, arrest this man immediately!"
