Chapter 9 - The Promise at the Library

One year later.
The morning air was crisp and warm as the autumn sun shone down on the newly renovated grounds of Garfield Elementary School.
The old, rusted gates were gone, replaced by beautiful wrought-iron archways surrounded by blooming red brick courtyard gardens. The broken windows were replaced with energy-efficient glass, and the dark, linoleum corridors were now brightly lit, filled with colorful student artwork and modern learning spaces.
In the center of the school stood the brand-new Mrs. Holloway Memorial Library & Digital Learning Center.
It was a magnificent, two-story glass structure filled with thousands of new books, high-speed computer labs, comfortable reading nooks, and a skylight that allowed natural sunlight to bathe the room in warm light.
A large crowd of neighborhood families, teachers, students, and city officials gathered in the courtyard for the grand opening ceremony.
Seven-year-old Lily—now healthy, vibrant, and top of her second-grade class—stood near the red ribbon at the library entrance, holding a pair of large ceremonial silver scissors. Her hands were completely healed, smooth and unscarred.
Standing beside her was Clara, who had been appointed by the city council as the Chief Community Liaison for the District’s new oversight board, ensuring that safety, fair wages, and proper facilities were maintained across every school in Chicago.
Nathan Reed stood behind them, wearing a simple, dark blue suit, looking at the building he had dreamed of creating since he was a fourteen-year-old boy sitting in the dark cold.
Lily looked up at Nathan, pulling on his sleeve.
"Nathan!" Lily squealed happily. "Can I cut the ribbon now?"
Nathan knelt beside her, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face—a smile that had become a permanent part of his life over the past year.
"You have the honors, Lily," Nathan said softly. "You built this place."
Lily snickered, snapped the large silver scissors shut, and cut the bright red ribbon in half!

The crowd cheered, clapping and throwing colorful confetti into the air as the heavy glass doors of the library swung open, welcoming dozens of laughing children inside to explore their new world.
Nathan stood up, stepping beside Clara as they watched Lily run inside with a group of her classmates, pointing excitedly toward the children's reading section.
