Chapter 6 - A Daughter’s Courage

The morning sun broke through the coastal fog, bathing the Malone estate in soft golden light.

Sarah sat in a wheelchair on the sunlit terrace overlooking the sweeping gardens, dressed in a soft cashmere sweater. Her face already had more color, her breathing was steady, and the continuous monitoring equipment attached to her wrist showed her heart rate was finally stabilizing.

Gracie was sitting on the stone floor beside her mother, carefully coloring in a picture book with a brand-new set of sixty-four crayons that Chef Jean had bought for her.

The heavy glass doors opened, and Connor stepped onto the terrace. He had changed into a clean charcoal suit, his hair washed, all traces of the damp night at the docks washed away.

Gracie looked up, her face lighting up with a brilliant smile. "Mr. Connor! Look! I colored the banana yellow AND green, just like the ones at the store!"

Connor walked over, kneeling down beside her, looking closely at the drawing. "That is exceptional work, Gracie. Very realistic."

Sarah looked up at Connor, her eyes filled with an anxious, unspoken question. "Connor... where were you last night?"

Connor looked at Sarah gently. "Taking care of old business."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick document embossed with official court seals, laying it gently in Sarah’s lap.

Sarah looked down at the paperwork. Her breath caught in her throat.

It was a full legal deed transferring the entire waterfront property—worth tens of millions of dollars—back into her name, along with an absolute, irrevocable emergency divorce decree and full sole custody papers for Gracie, signed by Daniel Webb.

"He... he signed them?" Sarah whispered, tears pooling in her eyes. "How?"

"Daniel realized that he was no longer fit to be in your lives," Connor said softly, omitting the details of the dark night at the docks. "He has surrendered all legal rights to Gracie. He has left the city, and he will never, ever come near you or this child again. You are free, Sarah."

Sarah buried her face in her hands, weeping silently. For four years, she had carried the crushing weight of fear, debt, and ducking from shadows. For four years, she had believed she was doomed to die in a cold room while her daughter starved.

Gracie put her crayons down, standing up and wrapping her small arms around her mother’s neck. "Don't cry, Mommy. Mr. Connor said you were getting better."

"I am crying because I'm happy, baby," Sarah sobbed, pulling Gracie close and kissing her red braids. "I'm so happy."

Connor stood up, turning to give them privacy, but Sarah reached out, grabbing his sleeve.

"Connor... wait," she choked out. "How can I ever repay you? The land... the money... you saved our lives."

Connor looked down at her, his eyes warm and filled with deep honor. "Thomas Vance saved my life four years ago, Sarah. I’m just paying back the interest."
