Chapter 7 - The Trial of Heart and Steel

Two weeks passed, transformed by peace and medical care.

Under the care of top specialists, Sarah’s condition improved dramatically. She was cleared for her heart valve repair surgery—a delicate procedure, but one with a ninety-five percent success rate thanks to her restored strength.

On the morning of the surgery, Connor stood in the private waiting room at St. Jude’s Hospital. He paced the floor continuously, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, looking more anxious than he had ever looked during any mafia turf war.

Liam stepped into the room, holding two paper cups of coffee. He passed one to his boss.

"She’s going to make it, Boss," Liam said softly. "Dr. Mercer is the best in the country."

"I know," Connor murmured, staring out the window at the city skyline below. "I'm not worried about the doctor, Liam. I'm worried about what comes after."

Liam raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

"For four years, my life was defined by control, violence, and keeping people at a distance," Connor confessed, his voice dropping into a rare moment of vulnerability. "I brought them into my home to protect them. But now... now she’s going to be healthy. She has her millions from the land development. She can buy a mansion anywhere in the world. She can leave."

Liam smiled faintly, taking a sip of his coffee. "Boss, with all due respect, you're an idiot."

Connor turned, glaring at his head of security. "Excuse me?"

"Have you looked at Sarah when you walk into the room?" Liam asked honestly. "She doesn't see a mob boss, Connor. She sees the man who stood between her child and starvation. She sees the man who gave her a future. And Gracie? Gracie thinks you hung the moon."

Before Connor could respond, the doors to the surgical suite opened.

Dr. Mercer walked out, pulling off his surgical mask, a wide, exhausted smile on his face.

"She pulled through perfectly," Dr. Mercer announced. "The valve was successfully repaired. She’s in recovery now, and her heart is beating like a drum. She’s going to live a long, healthy life, Connor."

Connor let out a long, shuddering breath, closing his eyes as a massive weight slid off his shoulders. "Thank God."

"She’s waking up," Mercer added. "She asked for you. Both of you."

Connor walked into the recovery room. The soft beep of the heart monitor filled the quiet room. Sarah lay in the hospital bed, pale but resting peacefully, her dark hair spread across the white pillows. Gracie was sitting on a chair beside the bed, holding her mother’s hand.

As Connor approached, Sarah opened her eyes, offering him a faint, beautiful smile.

"Hey," she whispered, her voice raspy from the oxygen mask.

"Hey," Connor said softly, taking her other hand gently into his large, calloused palm. "The doctor says your heart is good as new."

"It was already getting better," Sarah whispered, her fingers tightening around his. "The day you bought those bananas."
