Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Brianna stood frozen on the wet stone path, the color completely drained from her face. Her breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the man she was supposed to marry in forty-eight hours.

"Elliot... this... this is a joke, right?" she stuttered, stepping forward, her hands reaching out toward him. "Why are you wearing those horrible clothes? Why were you out in the rain? Did your car break down?"

Elliot took a slow step backward, avoiding her touch as if she were poisonous.

"My car did not break down, Brianna," Elliot said, his voice flat and devoid of any emotion. "I came here forty-eight hours early because I wanted to know who I was actually marrying. I wanted to see how the future Mrs. Elliot Carter treated someone who had nothing to offer her."

Brianna’s eyes darted frantically between Elliot, the security guards, and Maddie. Panic, raw and unadulterated, began to set in. "Elliot, you don't understand! This estate... we have strict security protocols! There are crazy people, stalkers, paparazzi! I was just trying to protect the house! I was thinking of us!"

"You weren't thinking of us," Elliot countered coldly. "You were thinking of yourself. When a human being asked you for a cup of water, you told your guards to drive him away into a storm. When a young woman showed basic mercy, you threatened her brother's life and fired her."

"She’s just a servant!" Brianna shrieked, losing control of her composure. "You're judging me over how I treat a maid?! Elliot, look at what we have together! Our families, our status, our future! You can't ruin everything over a beggar!"

"She is not just a maid," Elliot snapped, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light that made Brianna flinch. "She possesses more grace, nobility, and character in her little finger than you and your entire family have shown in your entire lives."

Before Brianna could respond, the heavy glass doors of the mansion burst open once more.

Arthur Whitmore, a portly man in his late fifties wearing a silk bathrobe and holding a cigar, rushed out onto the terrace. "What in God's name is all this screaming about?! The neighbors are going to—"

Arthur froze mid-sentence as his eyes landed on Elliot standing in the garden, wearing torn clothes, holding a fake beard in his hand, looking like a vengeful titan.

"Elliot?" Arthur blinked in utter confusion, stumbling down the steps. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are you dressed like a vagrant? Where is your security detail?"

"Ask your daughter, Arthur," Aunt Eleanor interjected smoothly, leaning on her cane with a smug smile. "She just threw the groom out of the house for being poor."

"What?!" Arthur gasped, looking at Brianna. "Brianna, what did you do?!"

"I didn't know it was him!" Brianna screamed, tears finally spilling over her heavy makeup, ruining her pristine appearance. "He lied to me! He disguised himself to trick me! It was a trap, Dad! He trapped me!"

"It wasn't a trap, Brianna. It was a mirror," Elliot said quietly. He turned his back on them, walking directly over to Maddie, who was still standing near the rosebushes, completely stunned into silence.

Elliot reached out and gently took the heavy coffee tray from her trembling hands, setting it down on a nearby garden bench. He looked down into her wide brown eyes, his voice softening completely.

"Maddie," he said gently. "You are not fired."

Maddie swallowed hard, looking at his fine, sharp features, suddenly feeling overwhelmed by his presence. "Mr. Carter... I... I don't know what to say."

"You don't have to say anything," Elliot said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his satellite phone, handing it to her. "Call your mother. Tell her that Leo is being transferred to the Private Pediatric Wing at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago effective immediately. The best specialists in the country will be handling his care, and every expense will be covered by the Carter Foundation."

Maddie’s breath hitched. She covered her mouth with both hands, tears flooding her eyes—not tears of fear, but of pure, uncontained shock and joy. "Mr. Carter... no... I can't accept that... that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars..."

"You gave a shivering stranger your own food and umbrella when you had nothing to gain," Elliot said softly, looking into her eyes with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. "Consider this a small return on your investment."

"Elliot! Stop this madness right now!" Arthur Whitmore roared, marching toward them, his face turning purple with rage. "You cannot come onto my property, insult my daughter, and make promises to my staff! We have a signed marriage contract between our families! The announcement is scheduled for tomorrow’s paper!"

Elliot turned slowly to face Arthur. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an arctic chill that made the older man stop dead in his tracks.

"A contract, Arthur?" Elliot asked, pulling his encrypted tablet from his satchel and tapping the screen twice. "You mean the contract designed to cover up the two hundred million dollars in fraudulent debt you owe to European equity firms? The debt that would have bankrupted your estate by the end of this month if my family’s capital didn't bail you out?"

Arthur Whitmore went completely white. His cigar slipped from his fingers, falling into the wet grass. "How... how do you know about that...?"

"I am Elliot Carter," he replied simply. "I know everything. By nine o'clock this morning, my legal team will acquire your outstanding debt notes from the primary lender. I now own your mortgage, Arthur. I own this mansion, I own your shipping lines, and I own every asset tied to the Whitmore name."

Brianna let out a high-pitched sob, clutching her father’s arm. "Dad... what is he talking about? What does he mean he owns us?!"

Elliot looked at the security guards, who were now standing frozen, utterly terrified of taking a single wrong step.

"Guards," Elliot commanded smoothly. "Escort Mr. Whitmore and his daughter back inside. They have twenty-four hours to pack their personal belongings and vacate my property."

"You can't do this!" Brianna shrieked as the guards, recognizing who actually held the power, reluctantly stepped forward to guide her away. "Elliot! I love you! Please! It was a mistake! I can change! Elliot!"

Elliot didn't look back. He turned to Aunt Eleanor, offering her his arm.

"Shall we go inside and have a proper breakfast, Aunt Eleanor?" he asked softly.

Aunt Eleanor smiled brilliantly, taking his arm. "Only if this charming young lady joins us," she said, gesturing toward Maddie.

Maddie looked down at her simple uniform, then at Elliot, feeling entirely out of place amidst the soaring marble columns of the estate. "Mr. Carter... I'm just an assistant... I don't belong in the main dining room..."

Elliot took her hand gently in his. His grip was warm, strong, and reassuring.

"Maddie," Elliot said softly, his blue eyes holding hers. "From this moment on, you belong wherever you choose to stand."
