Chapter 6 - The Counterstrike

At four o'clock sharp, the press room on the ground floor of the Carter Enterprises Tower was packed to shoulder-to-shoulder capacity. Over fifty news crews, national journalists, and legal analysts filled the rows, their cameras pointing toward a pristine oak podium bearing the Carter crest.

The atmosphere was electric with anticipation. The scandal had dominated national headlines for six hours, with social media debating whether Elliot Carter was a ruthless corporate villain or Brianna Whitmore a bitter socialite.

Backstage, Maddie stood nervously in the green room. Her mother, Sarah Brooks, sat on the sofa beside her, holding her hand tightly.

"Are you sure about this, Maddie?" Sarah asked worriedly. "We could just move to another city... we don't need all this public drama."

"No, Mom," Maddie said, her voice growing surprisingly firm as she looked at her reflection in the mirror. "For two years, I let the Whitmores look down on me and treat me like trash because I was afraid. But Elliot stood up for us. He saved Leo. I am not going to run away while they lie about him."

The door opened, and Elliot stepped inside. He looked immaculate in a black double-breasted suit, his demeanor radiating absolute confidence. Behind him walked Nathaniel Vance, the lead corporate attorney for Carter Enterprises.

Elliot walked straight over to Maddie, taking both of her hands in his. "Are you ready?"

"I'm ready," Maddie said clearly, looking into his eyes.

Elliot smiled—a cold, ruthless smile meant for his enemies. "Then let's finish this."

Elliot walked out into the press room first. The moment he stepped onto the stage, a blinding storm of camera flashes lit up the room, accompanied by a deafening chorus of shouted questions from reporters.

"Mr. Carter! Did you hire Maddie Brooks as a spy?!"

"Mr. Carter! Is it true Arthur Whitmore is facing bankruptcy because of you?!"

"Are the espionage claims true?!"

Elliot stood at the podium, placing his hands flat on the wood. He didn't speak immediately. He simply stared out at the crowd with an icy, commanding glare until the room gradually fell into absolute, dead silence.

"Good afternoon," Elliot began, his voice deep, clear, and booming through the sound system. "Earlier today, Arthur Whitmore and his daughter Brianna stood before a camera and spun a pathetic fantasy of corporate espionage and victimhood."

He turned to Nathaniel Vance, who handed him a thick leather binder.

"I do not deal in fantasies," Elliot continued ruthlessly. "I deal in facts."

Elliot opened the binder, pulling out a stack of documents.

"Fact number one: Arthur Whitmore’s company, Whitmore Logistics, has been insolvent for eighteen months. Here are the certified forensic audit reports showing over two hundred million dollars in hidden debts, offshore tax evasion, and falsified loan applications submitted to three major banks in Illinois."

Gasps echoed through the press room as technical assistants immediately broadcast the digital copies of the audit reports onto the massive LED screens behind the stage.

"Fact number two," Elliot continued, his voice hardening into steel. "The proposed marriage between myself and Brianna Whitmore was a calculated financial scheme devised by Arthur Whitmore to use Carter Capital to clear his personal guarantees before federal regulators seized his assets."

The reporters were frantically taking notes, camera shutters clicking like rapid gunfire.

"And fact number three," Elliot said, his eyes locking directly onto the primary news camera transmitting the live broadcast to millions of homes across the nation. "Regarding Miss Maddie Brooks."

Elliot turned toward the side entrance of the stage. "Maddie, please join me."

Maddie took a deep breath, held her head high, and walked out onto the stage. She moved with quiet grace, standing right beside Elliot at the podium.

Elliot looked down at her, his expression melting into profound warmth before he turned back to the cameras.

"Maddie Brooks was never a spy," Elliot declared, his voice echoing with absolute conviction. "She was a house assistant who worked tirelessly to support her sick seven-year-old brother. Two weeks ago, I disguised myself as a homeless man and stood outside the Whitmore estate in a freezing rainstorm to test Brianna Whitmore's character."

The room gasped in collective shock.

"Brianna Whitmore ordered her security guards to throw me into the street," Elliot revealed coldly. "It was Maddie Brooks who brought me hot soup. It was Maddie Brooks who held an umbrella over my head. And it was Maddie Brooks who gave me shelter when she had nothing to gain and everything to lose."

Elliot reached out and gently took Maddie’s hand, lifting their entwined fingers for the entire world to see.

"Maddie Brooks represents everything that is good, noble, and beautiful in this world," Elliot said, his voice brimming with deep, unyielding emotion that left every reporter in the room breathless. "Arthur Whitmore and his daughter are financial criminals facing impending federal indictments. And as of four o'clock today, Carter Enterprises has formally filed charges against them for criminal extortion, bank fraud, and malicious defamation."

Elliot looked down at Maddie, smiling softly, completely ignoring the wild frenzy of reporters shouting questions in front of them.

"This press conference is over," Elliot announced into the microphone.

Without another word, he held Maddie’s hand firmly, turning around and walking off the stage, leaving behind a chaotic storm of media frenzy that would destroy the Whitmore family once and for all.
