Chapter 4 - The Safe Haven

By noon, the news of the canceled wedding had sent shockwaves through the financial and social circles of Chicago.

High-society gossip columns were ablaze with rumors. The Whitmore family had issued a frantic press release claiming "irreconcilable differences," but the truth was already leaking through the ironclad walls of the estate. The abrupt foreclosure of the Whitmore assets by Carter Enterprises made the reality painfully clear: Arthur Whitmore was ruined, and Brianna Whitmore had been cast aside.

Inside the grand dining room of the estate, however, the atmosphere was serene.

The sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling French doors, illuminating a long mahogany table laid with porcelain, fresh fruit, and warm pastries.

Maddie sat in a plush velvet armchair near the head of the table. She had been persuaded by Aunt Eleanor to change out of her uniform into a simple, elegant cream-colored sweater and navy skirt provided by the estate's guest wardrobe. She looked stunning—her dark hair cascading over her shoulders, her natural beauty shining far brighter than Brianna’s heavy makeup ever had.

Across the table, Elliot sat in a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly styled, looking every bit the formidable corporate king. Yet every time his eyes moved to Maddie, his harsh expression melted into genuine warmth.

"Your brother Leo has arrived at Northwestern Memorial," Elliot said, setting down his crystal glass of orange juice. "Dr. Bradley, the chief of pediatric pulmonology, personally received him an hour ago. He called to inform me that Leo’s vitals are stable, and they are beginning a new experimental therapy that has an eighty-five percent success rate."

Maddie set down her teacup, her eyes shining with tears of profound gratitude. "I... I spoke to my mother thirty minutes ago. She was crying so hard she could barely speak. She thought it was a dream, Mr. Carter. She kept asking if an angel had paid for the hospital room."

"Not an angel," Aunt Eleanor said with a warm laugh, buttering a croissant. "Just my headstrong nephew, who finally used his brain instead of listening to corporate matchmakers." She glanced pointedly at Elliot. "Though I must say, Elliot, pretending to be a vagrant in the rain was a bit melodramatic, even for you."

Elliot offered a faint, sheepish smile. "It was the only way to test her true nature, Aunt Eleanor. If I had come as myself, Brianna would have played the perfect, loving fiancée until the ink on the marriage license was dry."

"And what a tragic marriage that would have been," Eleanor mused softly. She turned her kindly eyes toward Maddie. "Maddie, my dear, what are your plans now? The Whitmores will be vacating the property by tomorrow morning, and this house will be undergoing extensive renovations under Elliot’s management."

Maddie looked down at her hands, feeling a sudden wave of uncertainty. "I... I need to find an apartment in Chicago so I can be close to Leo's hospital. I'll look for a new job at a hotel or a restaurant downtown."

"Nonsense," Elliot said firmly, his voice leaving no room for debate. "You are not going back to working double shifts in hospitality, Maddie."

Maddie looked up, surprised. "Mr. Carter, you've already saved my brother's life. I can't keep taking charity from you—"

"It is not charity," Elliot interrupted gently, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Before you dropped out of college to support your family, you were studying English literature and communications with a top GPA. I read your academic record this morning."

Maddie blushed slightly. "That was years ago..."

"I am establishing the Carter Educational Foundation next month," Elliot continued, his blue eyes locked onto hers with unwavering focus. "We need an Executive Communications Director to manage scholarship distributions and public outreach. The salary is generous, it includes full medical coverage for your entire family, and the office is located ten minutes from Northwestern Memorial Hospital."

Maddie gasped, her heart pounding against her ribs. "You... you want to give me an executive position?"

"I want to give the position to the most qualified, empathetic, and honest person I have ever met," Elliot said softly. "The job is yours if you want it."

Maddie sat frozen, looking between Elliot and Aunt Eleanor. Aunt Eleanor gave her a warm, encouraging nod, squeezing her hand over the tablecloth.

"I... I don't know what to say," Maddie whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "I would be honored, Mr. Carter. I will work as hard as I can to make sure I deserve this."

"You already deserve it, Maddie," Elliot murmured, his voice rich with an emotion he could no longer entirely conceal.

Their moment was suddenly interrupted by the heavy double doors of the dining room slamming open.

Brianna Whitmore stood in the threshold, her eyes red-rimmed, her designer dress rumpled, flanked by two estate security guards who looked deeply embarrassed to be escorting her.

"Elliot!" Brianna cried out, ignoring the guards' attempts to hold her back. She marched straight up to the dining table, glaring viciously at Maddie. "You are giving her a job now?! You throw me away after three years, and you replace me with a maid in front of the entire staff?!"

Elliot stood up slowly. His towering frame instantly cast a long shadow over Brianna, his presence suffocating the room's atmosphere.

"Brianna," Elliot said, his voice dangerously low. "You were given twenty-four hours to leave this estate quietly. I suggest you use that time to pack your things rather than humiliating yourself further."

"Humiliating myself?!" Brianna shrieked, tears streaming down her face. "You ruined my family! My father is facing personal bankruptcy! Our friends are calling us, mocking us! Is this what you wanted?! To crush us because I didn't want a dirty beggar on my porch?!"

"You didn't crush yourself because of a beggar, Brianna," Elliot said coldly, stepping closer to her. "You crushed yourself because of your own greed, arrogance, and cruelty. You never loved me. You loved my name, my fortune, and what I could buy for you."

He looked her dead in the eye.

"Maddie saw a human being in need and offered him warmth. You saw a human being in need and saw trash. That is the difference between you and her. And that is why she is sitting at this table, and you are being shown the door."

Brianna stared at him, her chest heaving, realization finally dawning upon her that no amount of tears, threats, or manipulation would ever win him back. She looked at Maddie, her eyes filled with toxic hatred, before turning around and running out of the dining room, her high heels echoing frantically down the marble corridor.

Elliot let out a slow breath, turning back to the table. He looked at Maddie, offering her a soft, apologetic smile.

"I am sorry you had to witness that," he murmured.

Maddie looked up at him, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep, so profound, that it frightened her. "Don't apologize, Elliot," she said softly, using his first name for the very first time. "Thank you for standing up for me."

May you like

Elliot’s eyes widened slightly at the sound of his name on her lips. A small, genuine smile touched his mouth.

"Always, Maddie," he whispered. "Always."
