Chapter 8 - The Abduction Attempt

The autumn leaves were turning bright shades of red and gold as the silver sedan pulled up outside Saint Jude’s Private Academy in Manhattan.
Helena, now eight years old, stepped out of the school gates, wearing her navy school uniform and carrying her pink backpack, accompanied by two discreet plainclothes security guards provided by Miles.
Across the street, parked behind a delivery van, sat a tinted black SUV.
Inside the SUV, Damian Vance watched through a pair of binoculars, a cold, sneering smile on his thin lips.
"Is that the kid?" the driver asked, keeping the engine idling quietly.
"That's her," Damian said, tapping his fingers against his leather brief. "The little street rat that cost my family four hundred million dollars and put my brother in federal prison."
"What's the plan, boss? We grab her now?"
"No," Damian spat. "Victor has guards everywhere near the school. We wait until they reach the highway construction zone on the way back to the estate. My guys in the utility truck will block the rear security car. Once she's separated, we take her to the warehouse at Pier 22."
"And then?"
Damian’s eyes flashed with a dark, psychotic rage. "And then Victor Alliance will sign over the entire Carmine share block back to our family trust... or he receives his precious little daughter back in a box."
Twenty minutes later.
The silver sedan carrying Helena was driving north along the scenic river highway, followed closely by a black SUV containing Miles and two security officers.
As they entered a narrow, single-lane construction zone surrounded by concrete barriers, a heavy yellow dump truck suddenly pulled out from a side road, slamming its brakes hard, completely blocking the path of the lead sedan.
CRASH!
The silver sedan slammed into the back of the dump truck, its airbags deploying instantly.
Behind them, a second utility truck swung across the lane, crashing into Miles's security SUV, trapping them between concrete walls.
Three masked men armed with iron bars jumped out of the utility truck, sprinting toward the damaged silver sedan. They smashed the rear windows, unlocked the doors, and pulled a screaming Helena out of the backseat before the stunned driver could recover from the airbag impact.
"Got her! Let's go!" one of the masked men yelled, throwing Helena into the back of the black SUV where Damian Vance sat waiting.
"Help! Victor! Help!" Helena screamed, fighting wildly, kicking her small feet against her captors.
Damian grabbed her by her coat collar, shoving a rag over her nose until her movements slowed and her dark eyes fluttered shut, slipping into unconsciousness.

"Drive!" Damian barked. "Get us to Pier 22 before the police set up roadblocks!"
The black SUV sped away into the fog, leaving behind the shattered glass and burning rubber of the highway trap.
