Chapter 9 - The Battle at Pier 22

Inside the main study of the Alliance Estate, the phone rang with a sharp, terrifying urgency.

Victor answered it instantly. "Miles?!"

"Victor!" Miles’s bloody, bruised face appeared on the video screen, speaking through his radio from the crash site. "They ambushed us on the river highway... a coordinated strike... they took Helena!"

Victor felt the world turn completely black for a fraction of a second. His heart stopped, then began hammering against his ribs with a terrifying, primal fury.

"Who took her?!" Victor roared.

"Damian Vance," Miles gasped, clutching his bleeding side. "Our GPS tracker inside Helena's pink backpack is still operational! They're moving toward the abandoned shipping docks at Pier 22!"

"Call Detective Vance and the SWAT team!" Victor ordered, sprinting toward his private garage. "I am going there now!"

Ten minutes later.

The dark fog over Pier 22 was heavy and thick, smelling of salt, oil, and decay.

Inside an abandoned, rusting warehouse at the edge of the pier, Helena was tied to a wooden chair in the center of a bare concrete floor. Her face was pale, but her eyes were awake, glaring fearlessly at Damian Vance, who was pacing back and forth before her, holding a suppressed pistol in his hand.

"You really think that old fool Victor loves you?" Damian sneered, mocking her. "You're just a charity project to clean his guilty conscience! A street beggar wearing expensive clothes!"

Helena looked at him with her dark, unblinking eyes—the same fearless gaze she had turned on Victor in the rain two years ago.

"My dad is coming," she said softly.

"Your dad is dead!" Damian shouted, stepping closer. "And Victor Alliance is about to join him!"

BOOM!

The heavy steel doors of the warehouse were smashed inward as a heavy black SUV rammed through the entrance at full speed, sending iron debris and wood splinters flying across the concrete floor.

The SUV screeched to a halt twenty feet from Damian.

The driver’s door flew open.

Victor Alliance stepped out into the foggy warehouse. He wore no bulletproof vest, no weapon in his hands—only an expression of such pure, terrifying, murderous rage that even Damian Vance took a step backward in instinctual fear.

"Victor..." Damian stammered, raising his pistol, aiming it at Victor’s chest. "Stop right there, or I put a bullet through the kid!"

Victor didn't stop. He walked slowly, steadily toward Damian, his eyes locked onto his daughter.

"Victor!" Helena cried out, her small voice echoing through the warehouse.

"I'm here, sweetie," Victor said softly, his voice calm, warm, and steady despite the gun pointed at his heart. "Daddy's here."

"Drop to your knees and sign these transfer papers, Victor!" Damian screamed, his hands shaking violently as he held the gun. "Or she dies!"

"You don't understand, Damian," Victor spoke, taking another step forward, ignoring the pistol three feet from his face. "Two years ago, I was a coward who hid behind lawyers and money. But today... I am a father."

Before Damian could react, Victor moved with terrifying speed. He grabbed Damian’s wrist, twisting it upward as a gunshot shattered the air, the bullet embedding harmlessly into the high steel ceiling.

Victor delivered a devastating right hook straight into Damian’s jaw, knocking the gun from his hand and sending him crashing heavily onto the concrete floor.

Damian scrambled backward, coughing blood, looking up at Victor in absolute terror.

Victor picked up the fallen pistol, aiming it straight between Damian Vance’s eyes. His finger tightened around the trigger. Every instinct of vengeance, every drop of rage in his body urged him to pull it and eliminate the monster who had threatened his daughter.

"Victor... please... don't!" Damian wept, holding his hands up in terror.

Silence hung in the warehouse.

Victor stood with his finger on the trigger, breathing heavily.

Then, a tiny, warm hand reached up, gently touching Victor’s leg.

Victor looked down. Helena had managed to slip her small hands free from the loose rope knot and was standing beside him, looking up into his angry face with her wide, gentle brown eyes.

"Don't do it, Dad," Helena whispered softly. "He's not worth your heart."

Victor stared at his daughter. The burning rage inside his chest slowly dissolved, replaced by a deep, profound clarity.

He slowly lowered the gun, tossing it far across the concrete floor into the dark waters of the harbor basin outside.

Sirens wailed in the distance as dozens of police cars and SWAT vehicles surrounded Pier 22, their red and blue lights flashing bright through the foggy windows.

Detective Vance and armed officers burst into the warehouse, tackling Damian Vance to the ground and snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

Victor dropped to his knees, pulling Helena into his arms, holding her so tightly he could feel her little heart beating against his chest.

"Are you hurt, sweetie?" Victor sobbed, kissing her face, her hair, her hands.

"I'm fine, Dad," Helena smiled, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck. "I knew you were coming."
