Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT THE PARK

The sun was bright over Parque México on Thursday morning.
Dozens of news vans lined the streets surrounding the park. Satellite dishes hovered overhead, and a massive crowd of journalists, photographers, local residents, and curious passersby gathered around the stone fountain.
In the center of the lawn, set up right in front of the bench where the viral incident had occurred, stood a modest wooden podium with a row of microphones.
At 10:00 AM, a sleek black vehicle arrived.
Alejandro stepped out of the car. But he wasn't wearing his usual tailor-made suit. He wore a simple navy sweater and slacks. Beside him was Nicolás, holding his father's hand tightly, wearing his blue cap with a cheerful smile.
And stepping out of the second car was Daniela, accompanied by her grandmother and Don Roberto. Daniela was dressed in a pretty blue dress that Don Roberto had purchased for her, her head still covered by a soft white scarf.
The crowd gasped as the group walked toward the podium together. Camera flashes exploded like lightning bugs in the morning sun. Reporters shouted questions, pushing against the security tape:
"Mr. Montes! Are you here to apologize?"
"Is this a PR stunt to save your construction company?"
"Little girl, did he pay your family off?"
Alejandro raised his hand, asking for silence. The heavy, booming voice that had once terrified people in this very park was gone, replaced by a quiet, grounded calm.
"Thank you all for coming," Alejandro began, speaking directly into the microphones. "Four days ago, a video was filmed right here on this spot. Millions of you watched it. You saw a powerful man throw money at a young girl who had done something extraordinary for his sick child."
He paused, looking out over the crowd of journalists.
"You judged me harshly," Alejandro continued, his voice trembling slightly with genuine vulnerability. "And you were right to do so. I was arrogant. I was cold. I believed that because I had built towers and accumulated wealth, I was superior to the people around me. I thought money was the answer to everything, because I was too cowardly to face the pain of my son’s illness."
The park went completely silent. The reporters lowered their microphones, stunned by the absolute honesty of a man known for his ruthless pride.
"The girl you saw in that video is Daniela Reyes," Alejandro said, reaching down to take Daniela’s small hand and bringing her to stand beside him at the podium. "She didn't come to this park to ask for money. She came because her late mother, Valeria, guarded a sacred trust left by my late wife, Sofía."
Alejandro pointed to a large banner being unrolled behind the podium by corporate assistants.
The banner read: THE SOFÍA & VALERIA REYES PEDIATRIC FOUNDATION.
"Today, my family is officially releasing fifty million pesos—left by my late wife—to build a state-of-the-art pediatric cancer wing at the public hospital in Mexico City," Alejandro announced, his voice ringing loud and clear through the park. "Every child, regardless of their family's income, will receive world-class cancer treatment completely free of charge."
The crowd stared in disbelief. Then, a few people near the back began to clap. Within seconds, the entire park erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. Reporters rushed forward, taking photos of Alejandro, Nicolás, and Daniela standing together under the banner.
Alejandro knelt down beside Daniela, looking into her eyes in front of every camera in the city.
"Daniela," Alejandro said softly into the microphone. "I threw money on the ground at your feet because I didn't understand grace. Today, I ask you, in front of all of Mexico, if you will accept my formal apology—and if you will serve as the honorary president of this foundation in memory of your brother, Leo."
Daniela looked at the cheering crowd, then at Nicolás, who gave her a enthusiastic thumbs-up.

She looked back at Alejandro, a bright, tearful smile illuminating her face.
"I forgive you, Mr. Montes," Daniela said into the microphone, her sweet voice echoing across the lawn. "And Leo would be very happy today."
