Chapter 8 - A NEW BEGINNING IN TEPITO

The announcement of the foundation sent shockwaves through Mexico City, completely erasing the scandal and replacing it with a national movement of generosity. Local businesses, celebrities, and citizens contributed millions more to the foundation fund within a week.

However, Alejandro knew that writing checks was only the first step in his personal transformation.

The following Saturday, Alejandro's Mercedes pulled up outside the crumbling vecindad in Tepito once again. But this time, he wasn't carrying maps or lawyers.

He was accompanied by a team of architects, contractors, and city inspectors from his own construction firm.

Alejandro stepped into the central courtyard, where Daniela’s grandmother was hanging laundry.

"Good morning, Doña Carmen," Alejandro greeted her with a respectful bow.

The old woman smiled warmly, wiping her hands on her apron. "Mr. Montes! We weren't expecting you today."

"I brought a few friends," Alejandro smiled, gesturing to the team behind him. "Doña Carmen, this building has structural damage from the last earthquake, and the plumbing is unsafe for the families living here."

Doña Carmen sighed, looking up at the faded yellow walls. "We know, sir. But none of us can afford to move."

"You don't have to move," Alejandro said gently. "Montes Construction is taking over the entire restoration of this courtyard tomorrow morning. We are installing new plumbing, reinforcing the walls, painting the apartments, and building a community playground in the center. All expenses are paid by my firm, and every family will stay in a high-end hotel in Santa Fe while the work is being done."

Doña Carmen gasped, clutching her hands over her chest. "Mr. Montes... you don't have to do this!"

"I do, Doña Carmen," Alejandro said, his eyes filled with sincere warmth. "Your granddaughter saved my family. The least I can do is make sure hers has a safe place to live."

Just then, Daniela and Nicolás ran down the iron stairs together, laughing out loud.

Nicolás was wearing his blue cap, holding a brand-new sketchbook, while Daniela carried a box of colored pencils. They sat down together on the wooden bench in the courtyard, immediately drawing pictures of dogs, trees, and tall buildings.

Alejandro walked over and sat on the concrete step near them, watching his son.

For the first time in six months, Nicolás’s laughter was loud, clear, and unreserved. He didn't cover his mouth. He didn't look self-conscious about his bald head under the cap. He was just a nine-year-old boy playing with his best friend.

Don Roberto, who had driven over with the kids, walked over and leaned on his cane beside Alejandro.

"Look at him, Alejandro," Don Roberto said softly, watching his grandson. "That's the boy Sofía wanted him to be."

"I know, Roberto," Alejandro whispered, feeling a deep sense of peace wash over his soul. "I almost lost him because I was trying to protect my own ego."

"The important thing is that you woke up," Don Roberto said, clapping a warm hand on Alejandro’s shoulder. "A proud man falls hard, Alejandro. But a wise man uses the stones from his fall to build a bridge."
