Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Past

The lead man was broad-shouldered, with a thick beard, a jagged scar across his throat, and a heavy brass knuckle duster visible on his right hand. His name was Jimmy 'The Hammer' Vane—a high-ranking enforcer for the Irish Syndicate in South Boston, a rival family that had been pushing against the Vale borders for months.
"Well, well," Jimmy sneered, his yellowed teeth flashing in a cruel grin. "Look what we have here. The schoolteacher and her little charity house."
Jimmy hadn't noticed Dominic yet, who was standing in the shadow of the tall bookshelf near the desk.
Claire immediately stepped between Jimmy and the hallway leading to the children's rooms. "Jimmy, I told you yesterday, the city inspector already cleared our permits. You have no right to be here."
"I don't give a damn about city inspectors, sweetheart," Jimmy growled, taking a heavy step forward. "This building sits on Moreland Street. Moreland Street belongs to Sean O'Connor now. The protection fee goes up to five grand a month, starting today. You don't pay? We burn this dump to the ground while your brats are taking a nap."
Claire’s face went pale, but she didn't step back. "We don't have five thousand dollars!"
Jimmy raised his heavy, brass-clad hand, reaching out to grab Claire’s shoulder. "Then you better find a way to earn it, little lady—"
A hand caught Jimmy’s wrist mid-air.
It was not a quick movement, but it carried the terrifying, immovable force of a hydraulic press.
Jimmy froze, blinking in shock as he looked down at the hand crushing his wrist. He looked up, meeting the cold, pitch-black eyes of Dominic Vale.
"If you touch her," Dominic said softly, his voice so quiet it was almost a whisper, "I will tear your arm off and beat your two friends to death with it."
Jimmy’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying recognition. "V-Vale? Don Vale?!"
The two thugs behind Jimmy reached frantically into their coats for their pistols.
Dominic didn't even draw a weapon. He simply twisted Jimmy’s wrist downward. A sickening CRACK echoed through the hallway as Jimmy’s wrist bone snapped in half. Jimmy shrieked in agony, dropping to his knees.
Before the two thugs could pull their guns, the glass windows on either side of the front door shattered inward. Four of Dominic’s tactical guards, clad in black Kevlar and carrying silenced submachine guns, dropped into the hallway. Within two seconds, both thugs were slammed face-first onto the linoleum floor, their weapons kicked away, boots pressing heavily onto their necks.
Silence returned to the room, broken only by Jimmy’s ragged, sobbing breaths on the floor.
Dominic let go of Jimmy’s shattered wrist, pulling a silk handkerchief from his pocket and slowly wiping his fingers.
"Whose territory did you say this was?" Dominic asked softly, looking down at the groveling enforcer.
"Vale... Vale territory, Don Vale!" Jimmy whimpered, clutch his broken wrist against his chest. "We... we didn't know! O'Connor said the street was open after your father died!"
"Tell Sean O'Connor that Moreland Street belongs to me," Dominic said, his eyes narrowing. "Tell him that if any of his dogs step within ten blocks of Harbor House again, I will put his entire crew in the harbor. Get them out of here, Noah."
Dominic’s guards dragged the three men out the door, throwing them into the rain like bags of trash before shutting the shattered entrance.
Claire stood against the wall, her chest heaving, her hands trembling violently. She looked at the shattered glass, then at the blood on the floor, and finally at Dominic.
"You brought a war to my doorstep," she whispered, her voice shaking with adrenaline and anger.
"No, Claire," Dominic said, stepping over the broken glass toward her. "The war was already here. My father was paying O'Connor to stay away from this building. That’s where the twenty-five thousand was going. He wasn't just funding your charity... he was buying your safety."
Claire sank down onto a nearby wooden chair, covering her face with her hands.
Dominic knelt in front of her. For the first time in his life, the feared mob boss lowered himself before a civilian, his dark eyes searching her face with urgent need.
"Tell me the truth, Claire," Dominic demanded gently. "Who was Danielle Carter? And why did my father sacrifice so much to protect her child?"
May you like
Claire slowly lifted her head, her brown eyes shiny with unshed tears.
"Danielle Carter was your father’s daughter," Claire whispered softly. "She was your half-sister, Dominic. Sophie is your niece."
