Chapter 5 - Building a Fortress

By Friday morning, the transformation of Harbor House had begun.

A construction crew hired directly by Vale Holdings was hard at work repairing the front entrance, replacing the broken glass with reinforced, bulletproof windows, and installing a state-of-the-art security system across the entire building.

Outside, two discrete black sedans were parked at either end of the street, staffed by Dominic’s most trusted men, ensuring that no unwanted visitors would ever threaten the center again.

Inside, Claire stood in her office, looking over a thick stack of legal documents that had arrived that morning via courier.

The deeds to the adjacent vacant lot and the small bakery next door had been transferred directly to Harbor House. Attached was a certified check for one million dollars, signed by Dominic Vale, establishing an endowment fund for the center's future.

Claire held the check in her hands, her heart pounding with a mixture of immense gratitude and lingering apprehension.

The brass bell on the newly reinforced front door chimed softly.

Claire walked out into the main hall to see Dominic stepping inside. He was dressed in a dark gray wool sweater and black trousers, carrying two heavy paper bags that smelled deliciously of fresh pastries and warm cocoa.

Behind him, Sophie ran out from the play area, her small yellow boots tapping loudly against the newly polished floor.

"Mr. Quiet!" she cheered, throwing her arms around his knees.

Dominic smoothly lowered the paper bags onto a chair and picked Sophie up with one arm, holding her effortlessly against his hip. "Good morning, Sophie. How are you today?"

"I painted a picture of a castle!" Sophie announced proudly, touching his cheek with her small, warm hand. "Aunt Claire said we're expanding the playground!"

"You are," Dominic smiled, looking up as Claire approached. "The city approved the permits for the lot next door this morning. We're breaking ground on a new playground next week."

Claire looked at him, her brown eyes filled with soft emotion. "Dominic... this is too much. The check, the deeds, the security... you don't have to spend millions of dollars to prove yourself to us."

"I'm not doing it to prove anything, Claire," Dominic said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. "I'm doing it because it’s my responsibility. Sophie is my family. And you... you have spent five years sacrificing everything to protect her when my family failed you."

Claire looked away, a faint blush warming her cheeks. "You didn't fail us, Dominic. You didn't know."

"I know now," Dominic said gently, setting Sophie down on her feet. "Go get some cocoa from the bag, Sophie. Ask Miss Sarah to help you."

"Yay! Cocoa!" Sophie grabbed one of the smaller cups from the bag and trotted happily into the kitchen.

Left alone in the hallway, Dominic stepped closer to Claire. The distance between them had shrunk over the past few days, replaced by an unspoken warmth that neither of them could ignore.

"I spoke to my legal team this morning," Dominic murmured softly. "I want to set up a trust fund for Sophie’s college education and future. But I want your name as the sole trustee, Claire. You remain her mother. I am just her uncle."

Claire looked up at him, tears welling in her eyes. "Thank you, Dominic. That means more to me than you'll ever know."

"There is one more thing," Dominic added, his tone becoming serious. "O'Connor backed down, but a cornered rat is always dangerous. I want to assign a personal protection driver to you and Sophie until I am certain the Irish syndicate is completely dismantled."

Claire hesitated, but looking at Dominic’s intense, protective gaze, she nodded softly. "Okay. Under your condition, Mr. Vale."

"Call me Dominic," he said, offering her a genuine, rare smile.

"Dominic," she repeated, the sound of his name making his heart beat a little faster.
