Chapter 1 - The Arrest on Christmas Eve

The red and blue strobes of police cruisers sliced through the falling snow, painting the white lawn in rhythm with the howling wind. Sirens cut through the quiet suburban street, dying down into a low, rumbling hum as four uniform officers rushed up the porch steps, weapons at the ready.

Behind them, the paramedics burst through the front gate with a gurney, rushing straight to where my mother sat trembling under my heavy woolen patrol coat.

Inside the foyer, Eric stood paralyzed. The smug grin that had defined his face for thirty years cracked completely, leaving behind the pale, sweating face of a frightened coward.

"Claire, what the hell is this?!" Eric yelled, his voice cracking as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "Tell them to leave! We’re your family! Vanessa, tell her!"

Vanessa dropped the crystal glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, dark red wine splashing across the hem of my mother’s stolen cashmere robe like wet blood.

"Officer down's sister!" Officer Miller called out, stepping over the threshold with his hand hovering over his sidearm, flanked by Officer Davis. "Detective Vance, what’s your status?"

"The house is secure," I said, my voice dead calm, devoid of any warmth. I held up my badge with one hand and pointed at Eric and Vanessa with the other. "Suspects are Eric Vance and Vanessa Vance. You are placing them under arrest for felony elder abuse, assault causing bodily harm, grand larceny, and real estate deed fraud."

"What?!" Vanessa shrieked, backing into the mantle, knocking over a row of silver Christmas cards. "Elder abuse? She fell! The old bat slipped on the ice! Eric, do something!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Eric barked, stepping toward me with his fists clenched. "Claire, you can’t do this! Mom is senile! She gave us the house! You’re abusing your power because you’ve always hated that Dad left me in charge of the family affairs!"

"Dad left you nothing, Eric," I said quietly, stepping closer until I was inches from his chest. "And Mom’s mind is sharper than yours will ever be."

I gestured to Officer Miller. "Cuff them."

"Don't touch me!" Vanessa screamed as Davis grabbed her arm, spinning her around and shoving her face against the velvet wallpaper. "This is police brutality! I know city council members! Eric, call our lawyer!"

"You're making a huge mistake, Claire!" Eric roared as Miller snapped the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists, pulling his arms behind his back. "I’m your brother! You're going to destroy our family on Christmas Eve?!"

"You destroyed this family the moment you put Mom outside barefoot in sub-zero weather," I replied, staring directly into his frantic, bloodshot eyes. "Take them down to central booking. Hold them without bail under the priority domestic violence and elder exploitation statute."

As the officers hauled Eric and Vanessa out into the freezing night, their curses echoing down the street, I turned toward the doorway. The paramedics were carefully wheeling Mom inside on the gurney, wrapping her in heated thermal blankets.

"Claire..." Mom’s voice was faint, a dry rasp against the sound of crackling radio chatter.

I dropped to my knees beside her, grabbing her frozen, brittle hands and holding them against my cheek. "I’m here, Mom. I’ve got you. They’re gone."

"The... the angel on the mantle," she whispered, her chin trembling. "Did you get it?"

May you like

I looked back at the small brass angel sitting above the fireplace. Its glass eye sat silent now, but inside its tiny memory card was every second of terror my mother had endured over the last three months.

"I got it, Mom," I said, my eyes filling with hot, angry tears. "I got all of it."
