Chapter 5 - Tearing Down the Net

By Wednesday morning, our tactical team had executed a simultaneous search warrant on the downtown offices of Apex Holdings and the suburban home of Julian Vance.

I stood in the glass-walled executive office on the forty-second floor of the Apex Tower. Federal agents from the FBI's financial crimes unit were packing hard drives into evidence boxes, while local officers loaded stacks of fraudulent land titles into metal crates.

Julian Vance sat in his high-backed leather chair, wearing a tailored Italian suit. He was sixty years old, with slick silver hair and the cold, calm eyes of a viper. Even as federal agents placed him under arrest, his posture remained relaxed, an amused smile touching his thin lips.

"Detective Vance," Julian said, his voice smooth and cultured as he held his wrists out for the arresting officer. "I must congratulate you. I always knew your brother was an idiot, but I didn't think he’d crumble quite so quickly."

"Eric was weak," I said, stepping up to his grand mahogany desk. "And you were sloppy. You thought targeting elderly homeowners who lived alone was easy money because nobody was watching."

Julian chuckled softly, standing up as the cuffs clicked around his wrists. "Nobody was watching, my dear. The system doesn't care about forgotten old people in oversized houses. I offered those families liquidation value. I gave those useless old relics a place to die in quiet state homes."

I reached out, grabbed Julian by his expensive silk tie, and pulled him down until his eyes were level with mine.

"My mother built this city while men like you were stealing from it," I whispered, my voice trembling with contained rage. "She isn't a useless relic. And you’re going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a cell four feet wide."

Julian’s amused smile finally vanished, replaced by a cold, hateful glare. "You think you’ve won, Detective? I have fifty million dollars in offshore accounts. My legal defense team will have these warrants thrown out before the week is over."

"Your offshore accounts were frozen by the Treasury Department twenty minutes ago," Daniel Mercer said, stepping into the office holding a signed federal forfeiture order. "And your lead accountant just turned state's evidence in exchange for immunity. It’s over, Julian."

As the FBI agents led Julian out of the building in handcuffs, surrounded by news crews and flashing cameras, I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking down at the snowy city below.
