Chapter 7 - A New Chapter

Six months after the trial, the town had moved on from the scandal that had dominated local news feeds all winter.

The Harrington family name—once tarnished by Eric’s arrogance and Julian’s corporate crimes—was restored to honor through Mom’s charitable work. Using a portion of the financial restitution awarded from Julian Vance’s seized assets, Mom established the Mary Vance Elder Protection Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal aid, safe housing, and emergency response services for elderly victims of domestic abuse and financial fraud.

I officially accepted a promotion to Senior Detective in the Major Crimes Elder Exploitation Unit, leading a specialized task force dedicated to hunting down predatory real estate rings and abusive caretakers across the state.

One bright Saturday afternoon, our backyard was filled with balloons, laughter, and the mouth-watering smell of grilled steak and fresh herbs.

Daniel Mercer stood by the barbecue grill, wearing a chef’s apron over his jeans, flipping burgers while my police colleagues—Officer Miller and Officer Davis—sat at the patio table, laughing and sharing stories from the precinct.

Mom sat in a sun chair under the maple tree, surrounded by neighborhood women, showing them the new knitting patterns she had created for the foundation’s charity auction.

Julian Mercer—Daniel’s younger brother, a kind, brilliant landscape designer who had helped us restore Mom’s ruined winter garden—walked up the back steps carrying a wooden tray of ice drinks.

"Here you go, Chief," Julian smiled, handing me a glass of tall lemon tea. "The garden wall is completely finished. I installed soft motion lights along the perimeter path so your mother can walk outside safely in the evenings."

"It’s beautiful, Julian," I said, looking out over the yard. The high wooden fence was covered in blooming white roses, and the patio was paved with warm, honey-colored stone. "You’ve done so much for us."

"I did it because your family deserves a sanctuary, Claire," Julian said softly, stepping closer to me, his warm grey eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. "And because I like seeing you smile when you aren't wearing a tactical vest."

May you like

I laughed softly, feeling a sudden, comforting warmth bloom in my chest—a feeling I hadn't allowed myself to experience in years.

"I’m getting used to smiling again," I admitted, taking his hand.
