Chapter 4 - The Whispers in the Alley

By November, the Pilsen community center was beginning to take shape. The walls were painted a warm, bright terracotta, and the local children were already using the newly renovated library after school. Bella had become a fixture in the neighborhood, her warm smile and no-nonsense attitude winning over the skeptical local shopkeepers who had initially feared the Romano name on the door.

But peace in Chicago was always a temporary luxury.

One rainy evening, after the staff had gone home, Bella stayed late to finalize the payroll. The building was quiet, the only sound the steady drumming of rain against the tall windows.

She stood up to lock the front doors when she heard the low, muffled sound of voices coming from the alleyway behind the building.

"Dante thinks he can build a pretty playground and make everyone forget who he is," a harsh voice muttered. "The Moretti family doesn't like new faces in this territory. Tell him the tax is due by Friday, or the pretty playground burns."

Bella froze, her hand hovering over the iron security latch. She peeked through the frosted glass of the rear exit door. Two men in heavy leather jackets stood in the rain, their faces obscured by the shadows of their hoods. One of them held a heavy container of liquid—gasoline.

Her pulse hammered in her ears. She could run to the front door, call the police, or hide in the safe room.

Instead, she grabbed the heavy brass fire extinguisher from the wall, threw the security latch open with a loud BANG, and stepped directly out into the rain.

"Hey!" Bella shouted, her voice ringing clearly through the narrow brick alley. "Get away from this building!"

The two men spun around, startled by the sudden appearance of a young woman in a cardigan holding a piece of fire safety equipment like a weapon.

"What did you say, girl?" the larger man sneered, taking a step forward.

"I said get out of here before I use this on your face and call the federal marshals who are currently auditing this foundation's security grid," Bella lied smoothly, her eyes wide and fierce. "You think Dante Romano is the only one who protects this property? Try me."
