Chapter 9 - The Crimson Winter

The winter of 2026 arrived with a brilliant, blinding blizzard that turned Chicago into a kingdom of white and ice. Rosa had recovered completely, now living in a warm, secure cottage on the edge of the Romano estate where the lake air was clean and the medical staff was always on duty.

The Moretti family had tried one final, desperate move in December—a legal challenge to freeze the foundation's land assets using a corrupt city judge. But Bea Ashby, the brilliant human rights attorney from the Ashby Trust, had joined forces with Bella, using the federal anti-corruption statutes to remove the judge from the bench and indict Sal Moretti for racketeering.

The wolves were finally in their cages. The old street factions were broken, replaced by the deep, deep roots of the community programs Bella had built.

It was Christmas Eve. The community center in Pilsen was filled with warmth, laughter, and the rich, sweet scent of roasted nuts and hot cocoa. A massive Christmas tree stood in the central rotunda, decorated with mismatched ornaments made by the local children.

Bella stood by the library doorway, a glass of warm cider in her hand, her eyes locked on her mother, who was sitting near the fireplace laughing with Isabella Romano.

A soft shadow fell across the floor beside her.

Dante stood there, dressed in a simple dark suit, his tie loosened, the fierce storm of his usual expression completely replaced by a quiet, contented peace.

"What are you thinking about, Miss Marino?" he teased softly, his voice a low rumble.

"I’m thinking about an orange rolling into a gutter," Bella smiled, turning to face him. "And how a torn grocery bag in the rain can lead to a whole world of light."
