Chapter 4 - The Sanatorium in the Pines

By 3:00 AM, Leo’s private armored SUV cut through the dense pine forests of upstate New York, bypassing the rusted iron gates of St. Jude's regional annex—a decommissioned psychiatric facility privately leased under a front corporation tied to Franco Vance.

Clare sat in the passenger seat, gripping the door handle as the vehicle crept forward without headlights, relying on thermal imaging cameras mounted on the dashboard.

"Are you sure she's here?" Clare whispered into the dim cabin.

"My sources confirmed that Franco's private accountant made three large cash disbursements to this facility last month," Leo replied, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "It’s a nursing home on paper. A black site for inconvenient people in reality."

They parked a half-mile down the winding access road and hiked through the freezing mud. The facility loomed before them like a concrete monolith, surrounded by razor wire and security cameras.

Leo moved with the silent, lethal grace of a predator. Using a digital frequency jammer, he disabled the exterior security grid for exactly ninety seconds. They slipped through a side maintenance door into a sterile, smelling-of-antiseptic hallway that stretched endlessly into darkness.

"Room 214," Clare whispered, recalling the decrypted manifest they had downloaded from the hospital server. "That's where they keep the long-term custodial patients with restricted visitor logs."

They reached the second-floor corridor. The silence was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic hum of an industrial ventilation unit. Leo drew his pistol, flicking off the safety, and motioned for Clare to stay behind him.

He eased open the door to Room 214.

The room was dark, illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through heavy iron-barred windows. In the center of the room sat a single hospital bed. A frail, silver-haired woman lay beneath a thin white sheet, her breathing shallow and raspy.

Leo stepped inside, his boots making no sound on the linoleum floor. He approached the bed slowly, his chest tightening as he reached out a trembling hand to pull back the blanket.

The woman stirred, opening her eyes. They were a striking, unmistakable shade of deep amber—the exact same eyes Leo looked at every morning in the mirror.

"Leo?" she whispered, her voice weak, cracked with age and years of isolation. "My boy... is that really you?"
