Chapter 1 - The Silver Cipher

Rain pounded against the hood of the BMW as Ethan threw the gear into park, ignoring the furious chorus of blaring horns behind him. He unbuckled his seatbelt and shoved open his door, stepping out into the cold, oil-slicked asphalt of the avenue.

"Wait!" Ethan called out, his voice cutting through the roar of city traffic.

The girl spun around defensively, clutching her cracked squeegee like a weapon. Her wide brown eyes darted past Ethan, searching for escape routes along the crowded sidewalk.

"I'm not doing anything wrong," she stammered, backing away toward the curb. "I'll go, mister. You don't gotta pay."

"No, wait—please," Ethan said, dropping to one knee directly in the wet grime, completely unconcerned with his tailored suit. He reached out, keeping his hands visible and slow. "Your wrist. That bracelet..."

The girl pulled her wet sweatshirt cuff down instinctively, shielding her left wrist. "It's mine. It's not stolen."

"I know it's not," Ethan said, his voice trembling with an emotion he hadn't felt in nearly two years. "That silver band... it has three small emeralds inset on the inside of the clasp, doesn't it? And a tiny engraving of a swallow in flight."

The girl froze. Her eyes widened with shock. Slowly, with trembling fingers, she pushed back her wet sleeve. The silver bracelet caught the red glare of the traffic light. She turned it over, revealing the faint, worn engraving of a swallow—the exact custom piece Ethan had commissioned for his wife, Clara, on their third anniversary. Clara had been wearing it the night she died in a fiery highway collision twenty-two months ago. Her body had been recovered, but her personal effects had allegedly burned in the wreck.

"How... how do you know that?" the girl whispered, her breath blooming in white puffs in the evening chill.

"My wife wore that bracelet every day of her life," Ethan breathed, tears stinging his eyes despite the rain pouring over his face. "Where did you get it? Who gave it to you?"

"My mother," the child replied quietly. "She gave it to me right before she went away."

Ethan felt the world tilt around him. "What is your mother's name, little one?"

The girl wiped wet hair from her forehead with her small, scarred forearm. "Clara," she said. "Her name was Clara."
