Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Alley

Before Ethan could process the impossible words, a shadow lengthened over the wet pavement behind the girl. A tall, gaunt man wearing a heavy grease-stained jacket stepped out from the mouth of a dark alleyway between a dry cleaner and a bank.

"Hey! Move along, buddy," the man growled, stepping between Ethan and the girl. His hands rested deep in his coat pockets, and his yellowed teeth showed in a predatory sneer. "Laya, what are you doing talking to the suits? Get your money and get back inside."

Laya shrank back, her former fierce posture collapsing into immediate, practiced submission. "I was just leaving, Marcus."

"Hold on," Ethan stood up, stepping forward. His corporate authority flared instinctively. "Who are you?"

"I'm the guy who looks out for these kids," Marcus said, taking a step toward Laya and seizing her backpack strap. "And you're the guy standing in traffic blocking my revenue. Move along before there's a problem."

Ethan saw the terrified flicker in Laya's eyes as Marcus pinched her shoulder. Something ancient and protective ignited in Ethan's chest—a flame he thought had burned out in the wreckage of Clara's accident.

"Let go of her," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register.

Marcus chuckled harshly, but before he could escalate, Ethan pulled out his wallet, grabbed a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills without counting them, and slammed them into Marcus's chest.

"Take it and walk away," Ethan demanded. "Or stay here, and I'll have six squad cars at this intersection in four minutes. Choose."

Marcus looked down at the stack of bills, then back at Ethan's tailored coat and uncompromising eyes. Recognizing a powerful man with endless resources, Marcus snatched the money, shoved Laya forward, and slunk back into the dark alley.

Ethan knelt beside Laya again. "Are you alright?"

Laya nodded silently, shivering violently as the rain soaked through her oversized sweatshirt.

"Laya," Ethan said softly. "My name is Ethan. I want to take you somewhere warm and safe. I need to ask you about Clara."

Laya looked at the open door of the black BMW, then at Ethan's eyes—eyes that held no threat, only a desperate, aching truth. Nodding once, she climbed into the passenger seat.
