Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Gala

The annual Buchanan Capital Anniversary Gala was the premier event of the New York financial calendar. Held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, the evening gathered billionaires, foreign diplomats, politicians, and media moguls under glittering crystal chandeliers.
Franklin insisted that Valerie attend—not as a servant, but as his daughters' guardian. He had personally sent a team of stylists to her apartment, providing her with an breathtaking indigo silk gown that draped flawlessly over her frame, elegant silver earrings, and her dark hair swept up into an effortless, royal updo.
When Valerie entered the grand ballroom beside Franklin, holding Emma’s and Lily’s hands, heads turned across the room. She looked radiant, possessing an innate, regal grace that completely outshone the artificial socialites surrounding her.
Victoria, standing near the champagne tower beside her wealthy father, Arthur Vance, looked ready to murder someone. Her eyes burned with pure malice as she saw Franklin looking down at Valerie with a tenderness he had never once shown her.
"Watch this, Father," Victoria whispered bitterly, raising her glass. "The rat is about to spring my trap."
Halfway through the evening, while Franklin was pulled away by international investors to discuss a forty-million-dollar tech acquisition, Victoria made her move.
Valerie had taken the girls to the grand dessert buffet near the back of the ballroom. Suddenly, a young catering waiter bumped into Valerie, spilling a glass of red wine over her dress hem.
"Oh! I'm so sorry, ma'am!" the waiter stammered in panic.
"It's okay, really," Valerie said gently, dabbing at the fabric with a napkin. "Is there a restroom nearby?"
"Down the corridor to the left, ma'am. The private bridal suite is open for guests," the waiter offered nervously.
Valerie instructed the girls to stay with Eleanor near the chocolate fountain and walked down the quiet, carpeted hallway toward the private suite to clean her gown.
She entered the luxurious room, turning on the gold faucet at the marble sink.
Suddenly, the door behind her slammed shut. The lock clicked sharply from the outside.
Valerie spun around, rushing to the door and rattling the brass handle. "Hello? Is someone there?"
Silence filled the hallway.
Inside the room, sitting on the vanity table, was an open glass display case containing a legendary heirloom—the Buchanan Star Sapphire Necklace, valued at three million dollars, which was supposed to be auctioned off for charity later that evening.
Valerie frowned, approaching the table. The velvet lining was disturbed, and the heavy diamond-and-sapphire pendant was missing from its lockbox.
Before she could process what was happening, the suite doors were unlocked from the outside, crashing open with violent force.
Victoria Vance rushed into the room, flanked by two hotel security guards, three photographers, and Arthur Vance.
"There she is!" Victoria shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Valerie. "She stole it! I saw her sneak into the VIP suite right after the auction pieces were brought in!"
"What are you talking about?" Valerie demanded, stepping back.
"Search her bag!" Arthur Vance ordered the guards.
One of the security guards grabbed Valerie’s designer clutch purse off the chair, unzipped it, and turned it upside down.
CLINK!
A blinding sparkle caught the light as the three-million-dollar Buchanan Star Sapphire Necklace tumbled out of Valerie’s purse, crashing onto the marble floor!

The photographers' camera flashes began exploding like lightning in the room.
"Thief!" Victoria screamed triumphantly. "I knew it! A street maid couldn't resist millions of dollars! Call the NYPD immediately!"
