Chapter 9 - A Home Built on Love

Six months passed.

The cold winter melted into a glorious, sunlit New York spring. Central Park bloomed with vibrant cherry blossoms, and the heavy, museum-like silence that had once plagued the Buchanan mansion was completely gone.

The grand estate was now filled with life, color, and music.

Valerie’s mother, Alice, had been moved into a state-of-the-art medical penthouse suite in Manhattan, her health fully restored thanks to the best specialists in the country. She often spent afternoons sitting in the mansion’s rose garden, watching her daughter and granddaughters play.

Valerie had officially assumed her role as Vice President of the Sarah Cole Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar charity initiative funded by her inherited share of Buchanan Capital, dedicated to providing housing, legal defense, and healthcare for single mothers and domestic workers across New York City.

On a bright Saturday afternoon, Franklin, Valerie, Emma, and Lily sat together on a picnic blanket in the middle of the mansion’s vast back lawn.

Emma and Lily were giggling loudly, trying to teach their new golden retriever puppy how to fetch a tennis ball.

Franklin sat behind Valerie, his arms wrapped warmly around her waist, his chin resting gently on her shoulder as they watched the girls play.

"What are you thinking about?" Franklin whispered, kissing the side of her neck.

Valerie smiled, leaning back against his warm chest, looking down at the simple silver band on her finger—a promise ring Franklin had given her three months ago.

"I was thinking about the day we met," Valerie murmured. "On the steps of that bank. You looked like you wanted to throw me into prison."

Franklin laughed softly, a rich, deep sound that carried across the lawn. "I was a terrified fool. I thought I had lost my world. I had no idea my world was actually standing right in front of me, holding roasted peanuts in a paper bag."

He turned her gently in his arms so she was looking directly into his deep blue eyes.

"Valerie," Franklin said, his voice dropping into a serious, tender register. "You brought light back into this house. You gave my daughters a mother, and you gave me a reason to love again. I don't want to spend another day of my life without you."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He opened it, revealing a magnificent, flawless emerald ring surrounded by delicate rose-gold diamonds—a ring designed specifically for her, representing hope, new life, and true love.

"Valerie Cole... will you marry me?"

Valerie’s eyes filled with tears of pure, unadulterated happiness. She looked over at Emma and Lily, who had stopped playing and were watching them with wide, hopeful eyes, holding hands.

"Say yes, Valerie!" Lily shouted across the grass.

"Please be our real Mom forever!" Emma added, jumping up and down.

Valerie laughed through her tears, looking back at Franklin’s nervous, loving face.

"Yes, Franklin," Valerie whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "A thousand times, yes!"

Franklin lifted her up into his arms, spinning her around under the warm afternoon sun as the girls ran over, screaming with joy, joining them in a big, tight family hug.
