Chapter 7 - The Master Key

For the next two days, the coastal cottage in Cefalù became a war room.
While Matteo and Elena scoured the Sicilian countryside looking for my body, Bram and I dissected every financial transaction Matteo had made over the past five years.
"Here it is," Bram said on Thursday morning, pointing to an encrypted line of code on his military-grade laptop screen. "Matteo didn't just steal your company assets, Julian. He used your private security credentials to bypass the international customs verification system at the Naples container terminal."
"He was smuggling?" I asked, leaning over his shoulder.
"High-value unlicensed antiquities and unregistered currency transfers," Bram revealed. "Over four hundred million dollars' worth over thirty-six months. He used your shipping lines as the carrier, meaning if federal authorities ever caught on, you would take the fall for international racketeering."
"And Elena knew?"
"Elena didn't just know—her uncle runs the port authority office in Calabria that stamped the clearance papers," Bram said. "This wasn't just a corporate takeover, Julian. This was a setup to make you the biggest scapegoat in Italian financial history."
I stood up, walking over to the window overlooking the blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
"We don't just stop the shareholder meeting in Milan," I declared, my voice dropping into a hard, unyielding tone. "We let them sign the papers."
Bram frowned. "If they sign the papers, the asset transfer becomes legally binding under international law."
"Only if the person signing has the authority," I countered, turning back to face him. "Elena signed the power of attorney documents using my stolen digital key. But that key was updated six months ago when we upgraded our server security. The key she has is a secondary authorization node—it requires my live biometric signature to complete the transaction."

"Which means," Bram’s eyes lit up with sudden understanding, "the second she submits those papers at the Milan summit, she’s committing high-level federal forgery on live corporate cameras."
"Precisely," I said. "And we’re going to be sitting in the front row to watch it happen."
