Chapter 8 - The Grand Hotel in Milan

The Grand Hotel Galleria in Milan was a masterpiece of 19th-century architecture—a palace of marble columns, gold leaf ceilings, and towering crystal chandeliers.

On Friday morning, the hotel’s main conference hall was filled with over two hundred corporate shareholders, international logistics investors, and financial journalists.

At the head of the raised mahogany stage sat Matteo Rossi, looking immaculate in a tailor-made double-breasted suit, flanked by three corporate attorneys. Sitting beside him was Elena, wearing an elegant black silk dress and a diamond necklace I had purchased for her thirty-second birthday.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Matteo began, his polished, smooth voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "It is with a heavy heart that we convene this emergency summit today. As many of you have read in the press, our founder and dear friend, Julian Mercer, has suffered a severe personal crisis and remains missing."

Elena pulled out a lace handkerchief, delicately dabbing at the corners of her eyes for the benefit of the press cameras flashing in the front row.

"However," Matteo continued, leaning into the microphone, "our corporate duty remains clear. To protect the company from market instability, we are executing the immediate transfer of the southern shipping contracts to our trusted holding partners at Apex Maritime."

He gestured to an associate, who carried a leather-bound folder to the podium containing the master transfer deeds.

"With the power of attorney granted by Mrs. Mercer," Matteo declared, raising a gold fountain pen, "we hereby sign the future of this enterprise into secure hands."

"I wouldn't press that pen to paper if I were you, Matteo," a clear, powerful voice rang out from the rear of the hall.

The double oak doors at the back of the auditorium swung open.

The entire room went dead silent. Cameras spun around in unison.

I walked down the central marble aisle.

I wore a dark charcoal Italian suit, my hair combed back, my posture straight and commanding. Flanking me on either side were six uniformed officers from the Guardia di Finanza—Italy’s elite financial police—led by Colonel Marcus Vance, a man whose career I had supported during my years as head of maritime security.

Beside Colonel Vance walked young Sophia, holding her father Tomas’s hand, wearing a neat navy blue dress and looking around the grand hall with calm, curious eyes.

Elena gasped, dropping her lace handkerchief onto the polished floor. Her face went as white as a sheet.

Matteo froze, his gold pen suspended an inch above the paper, his mouth open in absolute, frozen terror.

"Julian..." Elena stammered into the live microphone, her voice trembling across the loud speakers. "You're... you're alive..."

"Disappointed, Elena?" I asked, stopping at the base of the stage, looking up at the woman who had plotted my murder. "You left my briefcase on the foyer table, but you forgot that a empire built on lies falls apart when the smallest truth is spoken."
