Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept
Ten years later.
Ellie Harper stood at the entrance of the new Baltimore city park, a sprawling green space built on the ruins of Harbor View, Building C. She was seventeen now, heading to college, her future bright and untethered from the fear that had once defined her childhood.
A familiar town car pulled up to the curb. Vincent Calder stepped out. He was older, his hair silver at the temples, but his walk was as steady as ever.
He walked up to her, his expression warm.
"Ready for the world, Ellie?"
"I am," she said.
He handed her a small, familiar velvet pouch.
"I’ve kept these for you," he said.
She poured the coins into her hand—the green-stained quarter, the train-flattened penny, the birthday nickels.
"You kept them all?"
"I told you," Vincent said. "Trust is expensive. And I wasn't going to let yours lose its value."
Ellie looked at the coins, then at the man who had changed everything. The park around them was filled with children playing—safe, happy children.
"You really scared the monster," she said.

"No," Vincent replied, looking out over the city that was finally, truly beginning to breathe. "We scared the monsters out of the city. There's a difference."
He stood with her, two people who had once been on opposite sides of a dark room, watching the sun set over a city that was no longer afraid of the dark. The monster was gone, and for the first time, Baltimore was quiet.
