Chapter 7 - The Collapse

The building began to shake. It didn't fall. The internal structure, compromised by the massive server hardware, began to groan and twist. The foundation cracked, and for a moment, the ground beneath the building seemed to swallow it.
The server farm was exposed. Beneath the ruins of the first floor, a gleaming, futuristic data center sat like a jewel in the mud.
The police swarmed. The federal agents who had been monitoring the situation from the sidelines moved in, but they weren't moving toward Vincent; they were moving toward Hayes.
The councilman tried to run, but Marcus intercepted him, pinning him against the hood of a news van.
"It’s over, Hayes," Marcus said.
Vincent watched as the city he owned began to change. The corruption that had festered in the shadows was laid bare by the light of a seven-year-old’s truth.
He found Ellie near the police line. She was watching the wreckage.
