Chapter 10 - The Glass House on the Mountain

Two years later.

The winter storm season had returned to the Cascade Mountains, but inside Summit Ridge Estate, the atmosphere was filled with warmth, light, and life.

A roaring fire crackled in the massive granite fireplace in the living room. The grand Christmas tree, standing eighteen feet tall, sparkled with thousands of gold lights, hand-painted ornaments, and a giant silver star at the top.

In the center of the room, three-year-old Caleb and Connor were laughing hysterically, wearing matching reindeer pajamas, chasing a pair of golden retrievers around the soft Persian rug.

Sophie, now eight years old, sat at the grand piano near the window, carefully practicing a holiday song under the gentle guidance of her music tutor, her small fingers moving with grace over the ivory keys.

Rebecca sat on the soft leather sofa, cradling a mug of hot tea, her face filled with serene, unshakeable peace as she watched her children play.

Ethan stood by the tall glass windows, looking out into the gentle snowfall dusting the pine trees outside.

He slipped his hand into his pocket, pulling out the silver bracelet—the one he had carried on the night this all began. He had had the bracelet fully restored by a master jeweler, the tiny hidden compartment now holding a new photo: a picture of Ethan, Rebecca, Sophie, Caleb, and Connor sitting together on the sunlit veranda during the summer.

A soft pair of small hands wrapped around his waist from behind.

Ethan turned around, smiling down at Sophie.

"Uncle Ethan?" she asked, looking up at him with her deep green eyes.

"Yes, my sweet girl?" Ethan asked, crouching down to her level.

"Are you ever going to close the big iron gates again?" she asked, looking out at the driveway where the snow was falling softly.

Ethan looked at the gates at the bottom of the hill. They were open wide, illuminated by soft golden lanterns, welcoming the world inside.

"No, Sophie," Ethan said softly, reaching out to gently touch her cheek. "The gates stay open from now on."

"Why?" she asked.

Ethan smiled, picking her up effortlessly in his arms, pulling her close against his shoulder as he walked over to join Rebecca and the twins by the warm fire.

"Because," Ethan said, looking around at the bright, beautiful family that filled his once-empty mansion with pure, unyielding joy. "This isn't a fortress anymore, Sophie. This is our home. And no matter how bad the storm gets outside... the light in this house will never go out again."

As the snow fell gently against the glass walls of Summit Ridge Estate, the warmth inside wrapped around them all—a fortress built not of steel and secrecy, but of love, redemption, and a promise that would last forever.
