Chapter 6 - The Reunion

The snowcat roared back up the winding mountain trail as dawn began to break over the Cascade Mountains. The blizzard had finally passed, leaving behind a pristine, sparkling world of crystal blue skies and fresh white snow resting softly on the pine branches.

Inside the heated rear cabin, Rebecca lay on a plush leather bench, wrapped in three heavy goose-down blankets, an IV drip running into her arm under the care of Ethan’s medic. Her face was washed, her bruises treated, but her eyes never left the forward window.

Every mile closer to Summit Ridge Estate made her chest tighten with agonizing anticipation.

Ethan sat beside her, holding her hand, gently rubbing her knuckles with his thumb.

"They really are okay, Ethan?" Rebecca asked for the tenth time, her voice timid, terrified that this was all a wonderful, dream-like hallucination brought on by hypothermia.

"Sophie had a small case of frostbite on her toes, but Dr. Evans treated it immediately," Ethan assured her, a warm, proud smile on his face. "She drank two entire mugs of hot cocoa with extra marshmallows, Becca. And the twins were sleeping like royalty when I left."

Rebecca closed her eyes, tears of gratitude leaking down her temples. "She took care of them. My six-year-old baby took care of them."

"She saved their lives," Ethan said softly. "And she brought you back to me."

Twenty minutes later, the snowcat rolled through the iron gates of Summit Ridge Estate.

The morning sun caught the massive glass walls of the mansion, making the estate glow like a beacon against the mountain peak.

When the vehicle pulled into the heated garage, Maria and two nurses were already standing by with a wheelchair, but Rebecca refused it. Pushing past her weakness, she leaned heavily on Ethan’s arm, insisting on walking into the house on her own two feet.

They ascended the grand marble staircase slowly, step by step.

When Ethan pushed open the doors to the master bedroom suite, the room was warm and quiet.

Sophie was sitting on the edge of the bed, wearing a soft pink sweater, her bandaged feet resting on a velvet stool. She was holding a small silver rattle, waving it gently over the double crib where Caleb and Connor were wriggling happily in matching fleece onesies.

When the bedroom door clicked shut, Sophie turned her head.

Her green eyes widened. The silver rattle slipped from her fingers, bouncing onto the rug.

"Mommy?" Sophie whispered.

Rebecca fell to her knees right there at the doorway, her arms opening wide, tears spilling uncontrollably down her cheeks. "Sophie... oh, my baby... my sweet, brave girl..."

Sophie scrambled off the bed, completely ignoring her sore feet, and sprinted across the room as fast as her small legs could carry her. She threw herself into her mother's arms with such force they both tumbled onto the plush carpet.

"Mommy! Mommy! You came back!" Sophie cried, burying her face into Rebecca’s neck, holding on so tightly her little knuckles turned white. "Uncle Ethan promised he would find you! He promised!"

"I'm here, baby. I'm here. Mommy's never going away again," Rebecca sobbed, holding Sophie’s tiny head against her heart, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her hair over and over again.

Ethan stood at the doorway, resting his hand against the doorframe, watching his sister and niece hold each other. He felt a lump form in his throat so large he couldn't swallow.

Behind them, Caleb let out a loud, bubbly baby babble from the crib, followed by Connor kicking his tiny legs in excitement at the sound of his mother's voice.

Rebecca pulled back from Sophie, wiping her eyes, and looked up at Ethan with a smile so radiant it seemed to banish every shadow that had haunted their family for eight long years.

"Thank you, Ethan," she whispered.

Ethan walked over, knelt beside them on the floor, and wrapped his long arms around both of them, pulling them close.

"Welcome home, Becca," Ethan said softly. "Welcome home."
